Dr. Mohammad Haider Reza
[edit]Dr. Mohammad Haider Reza (Persian/Dari: محمد حیدر رضا; also spelled Mohammed Haider Reza) was an Afghan diplomat, humanitarian, and international development expert. He served in multiple senior positions in Afghanistan's government and international organizations, including the United Nations and various humanitarian bodies.
He passed away on 5 May 2024. His death was acknowledged by several Afghan public figures, including a tribute by Moein Esbaq, a former official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[1]
Career
[edit]Government and Diplomacy
[edit]Dr. Reza served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan from December 2004 to January 2005. During his tenure, he represented Afghanistan in international forums, including the Mine Ban Convention. He was also nominated as Minister of Commerce and Industries in 2006; however, his nomination was not approved by the Wolesi Jirga. Humanitarian Leadership
[edit]In the late 1980s, Dr. Reza worked with the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, based in Peshawar, Pakistan. He advocated for international aid to support Afghan children affected by the war. He was featured in Sweden’s *Sydsvenska Dagbladet* newspaper, highlighting the crisis and the importance of humanitarian assistance, where he advocated for support to Afghan war-affected children.[2]
He held the position of Vice-President of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, where he advocated for a total ban on landmines and supported humanitarian responses across Afghanistan.
United Nations and International Roles
[edit]In 2009, Dr. Reza became the Programme Director of the Mine Action Coordination Centre of Afghanistan (UNMACA), under UNMAS. He led mine action efforts across the country, working closely with UNAMA and national stakeholders.[3] UNMAS Facebook Post
Later, he served as the UNOPS Country Director and Representative for Afghanistan, overseeing infrastructure and development projects, including renewable energy initiatives supported by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). ITC ILO - Afghanistan TDA Report
He subsequently held senior United Nations positions in Africa, although detailed assignments and countries are not publicly documented at this time.
