The National Microbiology Data Center (NMDC; Chinese: 国家微生物科学数据中心) is a national-level scientific data sharing platform in China, established in June 2019. It is led by the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and co-constructed by multiple institutions including the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, and the Computer Network Information Center of CAS.

Overview

[edit]

The NMDC is responsible for collecting, integrating, managing, and disseminating microbiological data throughout China. As of 2025, the NMDC has integrated over 823 databases, comprising more than 6 billion records and 6 petabytes of microbial data, covering the entire lifecycle of microbial research—from resources and omics to literature, patents, standards, and applications. The platform promotes data aggregation and sharing, enhances data-driven scientific discovery, and supports industrial innovation in the life sciences and biotechnology.

Core Databases

[edit]

NMDC's data system consolidates microbiome resources, genomics, and technical literature from 120 institutions across 46 countries. NMDC operates several specialized data platforms:

Sub-centers

[edit]
  • In 2024, NMDC established a regional sub-center in Heilongjiang Province to expand data access and integration in northeastern China.[1]
