Piergiuseppe Morone (born 10 May 1976) is an Italian economist and Full Professor of Economic Policy at Unitelma Sapienza – University of Rome. He is widely recognized for his research on the circular bioeconomy, sustainability transitions, and the economics of innovation.
Academic Career
[edit]Morone holds a PhD in Science and Technology Policy from the University of Sussex and a Doctorate in Sustainable Development Policies from the University of Bari.
His academic career has encompassed positions at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Naples "L'Orientale", the University of Foggia, and LUISS "Guido Carli" in Rome. He has also undertaken visiting research appointments at internationally renowned institutions such as the Stockholm Environment Institute, Universitat Jaume I in Spain, and Universidad de Santiago de Chile, demonstrating his commitment to international scholarly collaboration.
Since 2015, Morone has served as Full Professor of Economic Policy at Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome, where he also serves as coordinator of the Bioeconomy in Transition Research Group (BiT-RG) and director of the School of Sustainability Studies and Circular Economy (SUSTAIN). He maintains active international academic partnerships as an Associate Fellow with the Behavioural Environmental Economics Team at University College London (UCL) and holds a Research Fellowship at the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies at Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.
Research Activities
[edit]Morone's research portfolio demonstrates extensive leadership in sustainable development and bioeconomy initiatives.
He has coordinated major European research projects including SUSTRACK (2022-2025), STAR-ProBio (2017-2020), and CIRCULAR-BRICKS (2022-2024), while serving as local unit coordinator for numerous Horizon Europe projects such as BioFairNet, Rural BioReFarmeries, BioReCer, STAR4BBS and LIFE-EBP, with collective budgets exceeding €30 million. He serves as Vice-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and is a member of several advisory boards for EU research projects, including ROBIN and BIOBRIDGES.
At the national level, Morone has led significant research initiatives funded by Italian institutions, including serving as Local Unit Coordinator for the PRIN project "Protecting the Environment: Advances in Circular Economy" (PEACE) supported by the Ministry of University and Research (2023-2025), and the NOW-LET'S-GO project funded by the Ministry of Ecological Transition (2022-2024). He has also contributed as a subcontractor to the German-funded BioTOP project, conducting case study analysis on Italy's sustainability transition towards a circular bioeconomy.
His international recognition is evidenced by keynote presentations at prestigious conferences including the Forest Innovation and Bioeconomy Conference in Vancouver (2025), the European Workshop on Bioeconomy in Paris (2019), and multiple plenary lectures across Europe and Latin America.
Editorial Activities
[edit]Morone's scholarly influence extends through his extensive editorial responsibilities across leading academic journals.
He serves as Co-Editor in Chief of Societal Impacts (Elsevier) and Associate Editor of Cleaner and Circular Bioeconomy (Elsevier).
His editorial board memberships include Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, Current Research in Green and Sustainable Chemistry (both Elsevier), Sustainability (MDPI) for the Sustainable Use of the Environment and Resources Section, and Open Agriculture (De Gruyter) for the Agricultural Economics section.
As a guest editor, Morone has coordinated numerous special issues across leading journals, including "Sustainable chemistry for a circular fashion Industry" in Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry (2023) and multiple issues for the Journal of Cleaner Production on green economy practices. His editorial work spans publications from Elsevier, MDPI, and other major publishers, often coordinating cross-journal initiatives that advance interdisciplinary research in bioeconomy and sustainability.
Institutional Engagement
[edit]Morone has played a significant advisory role within Italian governmental institutions, particularly in environmental and sustainability policy.
He served as Economic Adviser to the Minister of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea (2019) and was a member of the Committee of Experts for the support of the G20 Environment at the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection (2021). His expertise has been consistently sought for high-level policy development, including membership in the Working Group for updating the Italian Bioeconomy National Strategy at the Cabinet of the Prime Minister (2019-2021), and participation in the Working Group on Economic and Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Ecological Transition (2020-2022).
Additionally, Morone has contributed to various specialized committees and commissions, including the Commission for the study of ecological transition and reduction of environmentally harmful subsidies, the Working Group on Sustainable Finance within the Committee for bioeconomy and sustainable taxation, and the Study Commission for environmental process unbureaucratization. These appointments reflect his recognized expertise in translating academic research into practical policy solutions for Italy's environmental and economic challenges.
