"Poplife" is a song by American musicians Umru and Underscores. It was released as a single on April 24, 2025, through Corporate Rockmusic and PC Music 2.
Background and release
[edit]Before its release, Underscores had played "Poplife" at multiple of her live shows.
In her cover story for NME, Underscores revealed that she planned to release "Poplife" at roughly the same time as her first Coachella performance on April 12. She had pursued making more positive music after her 2023 album Wallsocket, stating that she wanted her work "to be a more comforting place for people to visit, and for me too."[2]
Her last performance prior to the song's release was at Coachella on April 19.[3]
"Poplife" was officially premiered by New Zealand DJ Zane Lowe on his Apple Music 1 show on April 24.[4] The song was uploaded to streaming services within the following hours, with its music video being released two hours later.
Reception
[edit]The Fader's Jordan Darville described "Poplife" as an "electroclash-ified take on The Pussycat Dolls’ brand of pop music", and though he didn't expect to enjoy the song, "underestimating underscores is a fool’s errand." Darville additionally added that Underscores "sounds every bit the cold fusion-powered diva." on the track.[5]
Promotional performances
[edit]After the release of "Poplife", Umru and Underscores would announce that they were doing multiple DJ sets as promotion for the single.[6] Underscores would do several solo live shows to promote the single as well. Outside of their scheduled appearances, Umru and Underscores would also make an appearance on The Lot Radio to celebrate a month of "Poplife" being released.[7]
