Rae Steeves (Also known as Abigail-Rae Steeves), is a Canadian author and activist born on November 30th, 2005. She has been involved with climate advocacy from the age of twelve when she delivered presentations to politicians on sustainability. Since, she has authored two books, made several award winning short films, and continues to advocate for justice.

Activism

Climate

Steeves begun her activism career by founding and leading her own Environmental Non-Profit organization, which helped deliver sustainable products to local non-profits, organize fundraising events, and more. Shortly after, she became involved with Climate Strike Canada and School Strike 4 Climate Halifax, where she helped organized global climate protests. In 2020, she independently started a campaign to sit outside of city hall every Friday in solidarity with Greta Thundeberg. She went on to represent Canada at a global climate conference called MOCKCOP26, speak at the Nova Scotia legislature, lead webinars, collaborate with climate activists from around the world, and more. On the provincial level, Steeves has been advocating for the Coastal Protection Act, adding climate change to the Nova Scotia educational cirriculum, respecting Indigenous sovereignty, adding a youth climate council to the provincial government, among many other things. On a national level, she helped organize Climate Live Canada (a youth-led movement hosting concerts around the world to spread awareness of climate change), and Bank for a Better Future (a movement to pressure banks across the country to divest from fossil fuel companies and weapon manufacturing). Additionally, Rae Steeves has delivered presentations to activists and world leaders on climate anxiety, the role young people play in the climate movement, and how other young people can become involved in activism.

Children's Rights

Rae Steeves has been a spokesperson and a member of Children's First Canada, serving on the Youth Advisory Board, and facilitating conversations with youth across the country on important world issues. She presented at the Top 10 Threats to Childhood in Canada panel], spoke on the Weather Network on climate change and children's rights, made the front cover of the Chronicle Herald on youth mental health admist COVID-19, among other things. Steeves also is involved with the Vote 16 movement as a co-leader of Vote 16 Ottawa, a campaign to lower the voting age in Canada to 16.

Feminism

In 2022, Steeves co-authored and published a children's book on intersectional feminists called The Women's Issue with Kate James and Anne-Sophie Bartenstein. This project was completed with funding from Rising Youth Canada, and ended up earning a Certificate of Canadian Service from the Prime Minister at the time. Steeves currently serves on the Canadian Council of Young Feminists, a youth advisory committee for the Hon. Marilou McPhedran. She also wrote and directed a short film "Roses: A Visual Poem", on intersectional feminism, which has since premiered at global film festivals winning several awards.

Nuclear Disarment

Steeves is a member of the Nuclear Peace and Disarment sub-committee of the Canadian Council for Young Feminists, advocating for Canada to stop investing in Nuclear weapons, and advocate for other countries to do the same. She also attended the Youth Parliament Nuclear Summit in February of 20205 at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario.

Writing

The Art of Resistance

Rae Steeves wrote a book called "The Art of Resistance", coming out in June of 2025. It is a series of essays on the inherent intersections of the creative arts and society, arguing that the preservation of truthful art is essential for maintaining a true democracy. This project was made possible with support from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust.
