The club was founded in 1957 and since then it has been providing a forum for students to investigate scientific ideas outside of the classroom. Scintilla Science Club fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and a deeper comprehension of scientific concepts in students through a range of interactive activities, such as different Quizzes, Olympiads and Project-based works.

Students with different degrees of interest and scientific proficiency are welcome to join the club, which aims to make science interesting, inspiring the upcoming generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers. Every year, more than 5,000 thousand students take part in the Annual Science Festival hosted by Scintilla Science Club.

History

[edit]

Following in the footsteps of the founder Headmaster of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Bro. Jude Costello, C.S.C., Scintilla Science Club was established in 1957 by Bro. Gerald Kraeger, C.S.C. (Headmaster, 1963–1967). Since then, the Science Fair has been a regular feature at the school, organized under the supervision of a teacher and the active guidance of the Headmaster. Bro. William Sheehan, C.S.C. nurtured the club, helping it develop steadily. Later, under Headmaster Bro. Thomas More, C.S.C., Mr. Moinuddin Ahmed played a central role in organizing the fair. Bro. Ralph Baird contributed significantly to the advancement of the club. Recognizing the need for proper governance, Bro. Robert Hughes drafted a constitution for the club and officially named it the “Scintilla Science Club.” Mr. A. Sattar supported him in expanding the club’s activities. During this time, inter-class quiz and art competitions were introduced, giving the science fair a more festive and inclusive character with active participation from all teachers. After the sudden demise of Mr. A. Sattar, Principal Rev. Bro. John Rozario, C.S.C. appointed Mr. Suvankar Datta as Chief Moderator. Under his supervision and with encouragement from the principal, the club’s first official souvenir was published in 1998.

Today, the club has greatly expanded its activities, organizing inter-school and inter-college Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology Olympiads, set speech competitions, general knowledge quizzes, project presentations, art fairs, and more as part of its annual science festival.

Objectives and Missions

[edit]

By providing students with a platform to study, experiment, and create together, Scintilla Science Club hopes to spark a lifetime interest in science. The club aims to develop critical thinking abilities, stimulate creativity, and stimulate curiosity so that members may interact meaningfully with scientific concepts.

Scintilla Science Club's main goal is to encourage students' curiosity and scientific literacy by making science interesting. The club promotes a greater comprehension of scientific concepts by encouraging members to apply theoretical knowledge realistically through experiential learning opportunities like Science project. Along with fostering a love of science and teamwork, the club seeks to create a welcoming environment where students may cooperate, exchange ideas, and work on projects. In addition to guiding its members toward professions in science and technology by igniting their interest in STEM subjects, Scintilla Science Club also engages the student community through science festivals.
