Sophio Medoidze (born 1986) is a Georgian-born, London-based artist, filmmaker, and writer known for her experimental moving image work exploring themes of language, identity, ritual, and memory. Her practice combines poetry, ethnography, and feminist perspectives, often rooted in the cultural and political landscapes of post-Soviet Georgia.
Early life and education
[edit]Medoidze was born and raised in the Republic of Georgia, where she studied film at the Georgian State Institute of Film and Theatre. She later completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London.[1]
Career
[edit]Medoidze's work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as Tate Modern, Serpentine Galleries, and Beursschouwburg in Brussels.[2] Her notable projects include the Tusheti Trilogy, a series of experimental films and writings that explore her ancestral region in Georgia through poetic and ethnographic lenses.
In 2022, her monograph Bastard Sun was published by Distanz, documenting her practice and artistic development.[3] She has been awarded several residencies and scholarships, including the Sainsbury Scholarship and support from the Arts Council England.[4]
Her films have been recognized for their innovative use of language and materiality, addressing post-Soviet history, exile, and the body through intimate cinematic forms.
Critical reception
[edit]Medoidze's 2023 feature Let Us Flow received critical acclaim, with Sight & Sound describing it as a "mesmerising Georgian documentary" that blends poetic visual storytelling with political urgency.[5] Critics have praised her work for its unique fusion of experimental form and ethnographic depth, highlighting her ability to capture the nuances of memory and language within post-Soviet contexts.[peacock prose][citation needed]
