Tony Han is the founder and CEO of WeRide (Chinese: 文远知行),[1][2] an autonomous driving technology company established in 2017[3]. WeRide went public on NASDAQ (NASDAQ: WRD)[4] in 2024, becoming the world's first universal autonomous driving and robotaxi stock.[5] It currently has offices in San Jose, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen[6]. As of June 2025, WeRide tests and operates its autonomous vehicles in over 30 cities across 10 countries[7]. Its products hold driverless permits in China, the US, the UAE, Singapore and France.[6][8][9][3][10]

Education

Han holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign[11]. He also received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in 1998 and 2000 respectively[12].

Career

Han began his career as a tenured professor at the University of Missouri[13] and director of the Computer Vision and Machine Learning Lab[14].

He later joined Baidu's Silicon Valley AI Lab as a founding member[15], leading the development of DeepSpeech2[16], a deep learning-based speech recognition system which was named one of MIT Technology Review's Top 10 Technology Breakthroughs of 2016[17]. In 2016, Han served as the chief scientist of Baidu's Autonomous Driving Division[18][15], leading the perception, simulation, sensor and hardware teams.

In 2017, Han left Baidu to co-found WeRide[19], an autonomous driving technology company headquartered in Guangzhou, China. He has been serving as the company's founder and CEO.
