It generally passes WP:NFILM and WP:NFF, citing Yash Raj Films as the famous production company, most of the starring casts are highly notable, and the movie has much significant coverage. No offence with @CNMall41:, as in the first instance, I agree to his decision to move to draft due to some bad apples (a.k.a. sock users) responsible for the mess. War 2 is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. A sequel to War (2019), It is the sixth installment of YRF Spy Universe. The film stars Hrithik Roshan reprising his role from the predecessor along with N. T. Rama Rao Jr. (marking his Hindi debut) and Kiara Advani joining the cast.[2][3]

The film was announced in April 2023 under the title of War 2, principal photography commenced in October 2023 and has been shot at various locations across India, Spain, Italy, Abu Dhabi, Japan and Russia. The film's soundtrack was composed by Pritam, while Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara composed the background score. The film is scheduled to release on 14 August 2025.[4][5]

Prior to the release of War in late 2019, it was reported that the producers were planning on making a sequel to the film, with both lead actors Roshan and Tiger reprising their roles.[2][6] After the success of War, when Siddharth was asked about a sequel, he stated that "It’s too early to talk about it, but I definitely had an idea to convert this into a franchise."[7][8] On his birthday in March 2021, Tiger hinted that a sequel would begin production.[9] Siddharth, during an interview with MidDay the following October, announced that filming would begin the following year, confirming the sequel.[10] However, in April 2023, Yash Raj Films confirmed the sequel. Ayan Mukerji was hired to direct the venture replacing Anand, marking his debut in YRF Spy Universe, and his first venture out of Dharma Productions.[11][12]

Casting

Shanoo Sharma was the casting director. Hrithik Roshan was cast to reprise his role from the first film as Major Kabir Dhaliwal.[13] Telugu actor N. T. Rama Rao Jr. was cast as the main antagonist in April 2023, thus marking his Hindi film debut.[14][15] Kiara Advani was announced as the lead actress two months later.[16][17] Ashutosh Rana was cast to reprise his role from War and Pathaan (2023).[18] In Tiger 3, Roshan reprised his role in a cameo in the post-credits scene which was directed by Mukerji himself.[19][20] Anil Kapoor was cast in July 2024.[21]

Filming

The principal photography began in October 2023 in Madrid featuring stunt doubles, due to the lead actors having schedules in Hyderabad and Mumbai for Fighter and Devara respectively. A car chase sequence was shot in the localities of Salamanca.[22][23][24]

The second schedule commenced in the first week of December 2023 in Abu Dhabi where a boat chase sequence choreographed by Franz Spilhaus, was shot with stunt doubles. Additional action sequences were also filmed at the Yas Marina Circuit.[25][26]

In March 2024, Roshan shot his introductory sequence in Mumbai. A set resembling a Shaolin Monastery was constructed for the katana fight sequence.[27][28] In April 2024, Roshan and Rao shot for an aerial action sequence in Vile Parle.[29][30] In August 2024, Advani shot her introductory scene along with some action sequences in Infiniti Mall, Malad.[31][32] In September 2024, a song featuring Advani and Roshan along with a few action sequences, were filmed over a 15 day schedule in Italy, across Venice, Lake Como, Naples, Tuscany, Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast.[33][34] In October 2024, a 40-man action sequence was shot along with Rao in Andheri.[35]

The climax of the film was shot in mid-December 2024 at specially constructed sets in Film City and YRF Studios in Mumbai.[36] Stunt directors like Spiro Razatos, Se-yeong Oh and Sunil Rodrigues were hired for the climax fight.[37] A dance sequence featuring Roshan and Rao, choreographed by Bosco Martis, was filmed in March 2025 at Yash Raj Film Studios with over 500 background dancers [38][39], however the shooting was delayed to May 2025 after Roshan suffered a leg injury while rehearsing the song.[40] The remaining shoot of the song is set to begin from June 2025.[41] Rao began his dubbing work in June 2025.[42] The film has been shot in multiple locations across India, Spain, Italy, Abu Dhabi, Japan and Russia.[43]

Music

The film's music is composed by Pritam while lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The background score is composed by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara.[44]

Marketing

The film's official teaser was released on 20 May 2025, coinciding with Rao's 42nd birthday.[45] Major criticism was directed at the teaser's production quality, low-grade CGI, and the action choreography. Some fans also expressed disappointment with the casting of Rao, suggesting that he appeared miscast in the film.[46] The teaser also drew backlash for mentioning the release date as "This Independence Day – 14 August," which many viewers criticised since 14 August is celebrated as Pakistan's Independence Day. Netizens considered this a tone-deaf marketing choice, questioning its appropriateness for a patriotic film.[47] Additionally, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma faced criticism after making an inappropriate social media post about Advani’s bikini appearance in the teaser. His remarks were widely condemned for being vulgar and insensitive, especially considering Advani's pregnancy. The post was later deleted following public outrage.[48]

Release

War 2 is scheduled to release worldwide on 14 August 2025, a day before Indian Independence Day in Hindi along with dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu languages.[49]
