Zhu Pei founded Studio Zhu Pei at Beijing in 2005. From there, he has produced an extraordinary corpus of cultural works that have made him one of the leading figures of his generation. Marked by his American experience, which includes teaching as a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard and Columbia Universities, Zhu Pei was former Dean the School of Architecture, Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the AIA and Chartered Membership of the RIBA for his contribution to architecture, and he was selected as a jury member for the Mies van der Rohe Awards.
Zhu Pei's works have been exhibited at important museums: the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Centre Pompidou, Victoria and Albert Museum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, and MAXXI Museum at Rome, GA Gallery at Tokyo; and featured in exhibitions like Venice Biennial, Sao Paulo Art Biennial, GSD Harvard University, the solo exhibition at Aedes. His works have also been collected by MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Victoria and Albert Museum, M+ Museum, and Carnegie Museum of Art.
Design approach
[edit]Zhu Pei has built a distinguished architectural career grounded in the integration of education and practice, treating both as mutually enriching and inseparable pursuits. His work is widely recognized for its experimental nature and conceptual depth, shaped by a critical vision for the future of architectural education. Central to Zhu Pei's approach is his architectural philosophy of Architecture of Nature—a profound and original response to the pressing challenges of our time. This architectural philosophy is not only a poetics of contemporary architecture, but also a response to the disruptive impacts of global climate change, the fragmentation of regional cultures, and the profound influence of digital technology and artificial intelligence on architectural education and practice.
Awards
[edit]In 2007, Zhu Pei was awarded Design Vanguard Award[1] from Architectural Record. In 2009, Zhu was awarded 1949–2009 Grand Design Award of The Architectural Society of China[2]. In 2017, Zhu was awarded AR Future Project Award[3] from The Architectural Review.
In 2021, Zhu was awarded the Honor Award in the AIA International Award[4]. In 2021, Zhu was awarded "Culture" category winner in The PLAN Award. In 2021, Zhu also won "Museum" category winner in 2021 Architizer's A+Awards[5]. In 2022, Zhu won the grand prize winner in Brick Award from Austria[6].
In 1989, Zhu Pei won the Special Merit Award from international competition of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt from UIA and UNESCO
Teaching
[edit]Zhu Pei was former Dean and professor the School of Architecture, Central Academy of Fine Arts. He taught as a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard and Columbia Universities. He previously served as a faculty member at Tsinghua University.
