Can this be used on other pages such as lists to atomatically sort them aphabetically? --bse3 02:37, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This page just describes how certain pages are ordered; it isn't a tool per se. I don't know how to cause lists to sort alphabetically. Libcub (talk) 00:51, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you have to use tables to do sorting. Libcub (talk) 04:26, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this page not showing up in Category:Editor handbook? The wikitext seems the same as it is at Meta, where it does show up in that category. Libcub (talk) 07:39, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Case sensitive in Categories--has it changed?[edit]

I've been reworking a lot of categories for alphabetical order. Mainly, I've been doing a lot of category pages for genera of plants, that is, pages listing the species in some genus or another. And I've been making good use of the fact that sort keys beginning with lower case letters appear in an alphabet following the alphabet for sort keys beginning with upper case letters. I've been able to make a lot of the categories much more readable.

But just in the past couple of days, it all seems to have changed. I've looked at a lot of my pages, and the entries with lower case sort keys are interfiled with the entries with upper case.

Is this a permanent change, or is it a temporary glitch? I've heard some change is underway, and the glitches are happening. 72.83.149.28 (talk) 01:04, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Stephen Kosciesza[reply]

I think there was a temporary glitch, with defined sort keys generally being ignored - I don't think this problem (for generally speaking it has to be seen as a problem, rather than a feature) has been solved yet.--Kotniski (talk) 05:54, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Correcting alphabetical order in a Category list[edit]

I notice that in the page for one of the entries (Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls) is listed under his first name instead of his surname. How can that be corrected? Jgdc47B (talk) 11:37, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am noticing pages in which alphabetization is done with the first word, no matter what it is. If it's someone's name, the convention of using the last name is not followed. So John Smith would be alphabetized in lists under J, not S. And if there's "the" at the beginning, the convention of alphabetizing under the next word after the article is not followed. So The Andrews Sisters would be alphabetized in lists under T, not A. My question: is this Wikipedia policy, or is it up to each editor?Ramseyman (talk) 19:58, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For people's naming convention, we shall use surname first. For proper noun naming convention, we shall omit 'The' whenever it is present at the beginning of the name. Chongkian (talk) 03:13, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
