Jen Breach is an Australian-born children's author and writer, known for their work in both fiction and non-fiction for young readers. Their writing often explores themes of social justice, inclusion, and empathy.

Early life and education

Breach was born and raised in rural Australia. They pursued higher education in archaeology and English literature at the University of Melbourne, followed by a Master of Information Management and Systems at Monash University. Later, they earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.[1]

Career

Breach has authored over thirty books for children, encompassing topics from global food politics to LGBTQ+ families and animal sanctuaries. Notable works include:

  • Clem Hetherington and the Ironwood Race – a graphic novel adventure about a young archaeologist and their robot brother.[2]
  • Solstice: Around the World on the Longest, Shortest Day – exploring global traditions related to solstices.
  • Riley Reynolds series – featuring one of the first nonbinary main characters in chapter books for the age group.[1]

In addition to writing, Breach has contributed essays and reviews to publications such as The Big Issue and The Age. They have also served as a mentor for organizations like Girls Write Now and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.[3]

Personal life

Identifying as queer and nonbinary, Breach's personal experiences inform much of their writing. They currently reside in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]
