The Kusasi, Kusaasi, or the Kusaal people, are an ethnic group with majority found in the Bawku Traditional Area of Kusaug in the upper east region of Ghana with an estimated population of about 723,000 .They are the second largest ethnic group in the Northern sector of Ghana and also with a significant population in southern Burkina Faso. They speak the Kusaal language, which is a Gur language and are believe to the indigenous people of the area locatedin the eastern part of the upper east region.[1] The kusasis tribe occupies six administrative districts in the upper region of Ghana consisting of Bawku Central ,Bawku West,Pusiga,Garu, Binduri and Tempane districts with BAWKU as their capital. The Overlord of the kusasis is Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II who ascended the throne in 1984 after the death of his father Naba Asigri Zonzong baʼad Wabug I. The religious beliefs of the kusasis is Christianity followed by Islam and the traditional religion.

Festival

The Kusaasi celebrate the Samanpiid Festival.[2] The festival is used to thank God for a bumper harvest during the farming season.[2][3] The festival was first celebrated in 1987.[3]
