Muhammad Shafiul Azam[a] (born 14 October 1964) is a retired two star officer of Bangladesh Navy.[1][2] He was the assistant chief of naval Staff (Materiel), additional chief of naval logistics staff and commander of BN Dockyard.
Early life and education
[edit]Azam was born on 1964 in Nilphamari of then East Pakistan (now in Rangpur Division, Bangladesh).[3] Initially inquire after Bangladesh Army however, Azam later enlisted to Bangladesh Naval Academy on 1982. He was commissioned on 15 April 1985 at the engineering branch. Azam is a graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College, the National Defence College and the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College.[4] He obtained two Bachelors of Engineering at naval architecture and Marine engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and furthermore two masters degrees at defence studies from National University, Bangladesh and the strategic and development studies from Bangladesh University of Professionals. Azam also attended the engineering specialization course from Royal Naval Engineering College at Plymouth, United Kingdom.
Military career
[edit]Azam served as engineer officer at two warships and two patrol crafts. He also served as director of naval engineering at naval headquarters and chief engineer at two naval bases under Khulna naval area. Azam also instructed at the Bangladesh Naval Academy and the Defence Services Command and Staff College. As commodore, Azam was the commander of BN Dockyard. He was ameliorated to rear admiral on 2018 and appointed as assistant chief of naval staff for materials at naval headquarters on 11 December 2018. His tenure was truncated to seven months due to mismanagement and posted to National Defence College as senior directing staff (navy) and was succeeded by rear admiral Moyeenul Haque. Azam again returned and re-appointed as the assistant chief of naval staff for materials on February 2021. Azam was also the additional assistant chief of naval staff for logistics for four months commenced at November 2021 replacing rear admiral Lokmanur Rahman. Azam went to leave per retirement on 13 October 2022.
Personal life
[edit]Azam is married to Dr. Rejina Begum, a Radiologist currently working under the United Hospital Limited. The couple have 2 children.
