James "Jimmy" Isaac Neutron (voiced by Debi Derryberry) is a fictional character in the TV series The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the movie Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. He is the main and the title character of both the movie and the TV series. His name is a spoof of the scientist Isaac Newton's name, and is also based on James Chadwick who was nicknamed "Jimmy Neutron" for his discovery of the neutron. He is a ten-year-old genius inventor but his inventions seem to cause more destruction than anything and it is usually up to him to stop them. He lives in fictional Retroville, with his robotic dog, Goddard named after Robert H. Goddard , a pioneer in modern rocketry), his father, a bumbling car salesman and duck-lover Hugh Neutron and his mother, a neat freak Judy Neutron.
Jimmy's full name is James Isaac Neutron, but only his mother and his professor at college has used his full name usually after his latest invention leads to disaster. His father calls him "Jimbo" and Cindy Vortex, an extraordinarily intelligent girl from Jimmy's class, often refers to him as Nerdtron, Spewtron, King Cranium, and other such names. In The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour, Cosmo called him Fudge-head. Jimmy's best friends are Carl Wheezer and Sheen Estevez.
Background
Jimmy Neutron sports a disproportionately large head which he needs to house his large brain and its exceedingly high I.Q. This brain, a source of constant comment, allows him to invent devices that accomplish even the impossible. They rarely function as intended, however, and most often embroil his friends or the entire town in some crisis. In the moment of crisis, he will urge his brain on, saying, "Think, think, think!" whereupon viewers enter Jimmy's brain to observe its inner workings as well as to relive a scene from the early part of the episode. Jimmy will then shout, "Brain Blast!" and arrive at the solution for deliverance from whatever fine kettle of fish into which his inventive genius had landed him, his friends, or his town.
Jimmy's inventions include his robotic dog, Goddard, a cheese ray that can transform anything into cheese, a time machine, and nanobots. He has several gum and candy based inventions, which include "neutronic air gum" that allows humans to breathe underwater, gum that allows one to memorize books, and candy that satisfies all the tongue's taste buds. After eating such candy, humans develop a physiological need (addiction) for it.
Jimmy has several inventions to help him with transportation, the most frequently employed being his flying rocket and his hovercar. He also has a neutronic game pyramid which allows players to be in their favorite video game. He creates these inventions in an extensive lab located under his clubhouse and which remains accessible to him alone by means of hair DNA scan.
Jimmy's intellect doesn't comes from his father's side of the family but from his Mom's, shown in the episode (See Jimmy Run), in the episode, (Clash of the Cousins) where there is a family reunion, and in a few others. He searches for somebody in his family other than himself with the "Genius gene", which turns out to be the 2-3 year old toddler (Eddie), Jimmy's cousin, who was adopted, who becomes one of Jimmy's enemies in 1-2 other episodes.
Relationships with other characters
Carl Wheezer and Sheen Estevez, Jimmy's two best and ever-present friends, accompany Jimmy on nearly all of his adventures. Obsessed with llamas and Ultralord, respectively, they need Jimmy and his inventions to quicken their otherwise dull and pathetic lives. Normally, they play the foils to Jimmy's genius and sometimes solve the episode's crisis with some innocent or inane observation (or their bad singing). Other times, they merely cause the trouble.
Jimmy's inter-dimensional friends include Timmy Turner, Danny Phantom, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Jimmy and Timmy met in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour. In the The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 2, and they hated each other due to rivalry over their inexplicable fascination/affection with/for Cindy Vortex. Eventually, they become friends in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3 and have remained so ever since. Jimmy and Timmy met Danny and SpongeBob in Nicktoons Unite!. He also met Sandy Cheeks, Sam Manson, Patrick Star, and others in Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island.
Cindy Vortex is Jimmy's long time intellectual denigrator, equal, and secret crush. The two enjoy a love-hate relationship which originated prior to the beginning of the movie and the series. Cindy was the smartest kid in Retroville until Jimmy arrived. Cindy resents Jimmy's usurpation of her number one spot. This resentment drives her to prove the she can be just as smart if not smarter than Jimmy. She releases this resentment by mercilessly teasing him and his friends, calling him names such as "Nerdtron", "Spewtron", "King Cranium", etc., making fun of him and his friends, pulling pranks on them, and pointing out Jimmy's many and manifest mistakes and shortcomings.
Throughout the course of the series, viewers observe subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) indications that the two do indeed have romantic feelings for each other. Inexplicably, these two harbor an affection for each other despite Cindy's intense competition with Jimmy and Jimmy's frustration with Cindy's conventional instincts and intellect. During seasons two and most notably season three, Cindy comes to terms with her feelings for Jimmy and picks on him and his friends a lot less. She makes several attempts to get his attention. In the episode "Lady Sings the News" Jimmy finally kisses Cindy.
Betty Quinlan was Jimmy's first crush on the show. She had four episode appearances, and numerous cameo scenes. Betty is portrayed as beautiful and sweet, which is what is thought to have lured Jimmy to her in the first place. "Party at Neutron's" showed Jimmy's obvious attraction to her through his day dream about them running towards each other through a field of flowers, and was stunned when she asked him to dance on top of the table at Jimmy's party. In another episode he tries in many ways to win her affection (trying out for the school play, working in tech. to make props, etc.).
Jimmy receives two kisses from Betty. One on the cheek, and (after saving the school from a powerful tornado) on the lips. Jimmy and Betty's relationship stops short, however, when Betty tells Cindy to "Stay out of my face" and that Jimmy is "All her's." Some Jimmy/Betty fans still believe in the pairing, regardless, thinking that Betty meant something along the lines of: "You can have him for now, but break his heart and he's mine to love."
April the Gorlock has had one appearance on the show in the episode "Win, Lose, or Kaboom." In fear of her planet's safety, she had preformed a seal of trust with Jimmy, which resembled a kiss, after he agreed to fight alongside with her (making Cindy insanely jealous). After Jimmy comes back to save April and the other aliens, they all work together to retrieve Meldar's cuff links (Matrix generators). He gives them to April to watch after, proclaiming that he'd give it to someone he trusted.
April gave him another long kiss, and confused, Jimmy asked, "Was that the Gorlockan Seal of Trust?" She responds to him, "No, that was a kiss." Going into another spout of jealously, Cindy hauls him to their new spaceship and they return to Earth (before April can give him another lip lock). Even though they are a distance away from each other, April and Jimmy manage to communicate through Warp Mail.
Enemies
Jimmy encounters some diabolical villains in his show. These include the Yolkians, a race of egg-chicken related aliens, Professor Finbarr Calamitous, an evil genius who can never finish anything, and the rich young snob Eustace Strytch, among others. He also has an evil clone which is stuck in another dimension. The majority of the show's villains exhibit a comical element or have bizarre personality traits.
Super Powers
In the episode N-Men, Jimmy, Cindy, Carl, Libby, and Sheen acquire super powers when their spaceship passes through the Van Patten Radiation Belt. They all got a superpower based on their action at the time. Cindy got super human strength and was called Special Girl, with the powers of Supergirl. Carl got a super sonic burp and was called Burp Boy. Libby had the power to go invisible and called herself Invisible Sister, based on Invisible Woman. Sheen could vibrate at a very fast rate, or in other words he ran very fast and he was called Vibrating Lad based on Flash (comics)|Flash]]. Jimmy lacked a superhero name when he got his powers, but he did acquire orange skin, green hair, fruit body odor, and a shape-shifting talent which turns him into a huge, strong monster when he gets angry. This latter talent combines The Hulk and the Thing. His original outfit resembles The Green Lantern's costume.
Birthday
It is feasible that Jimmy's birthday is March 14 which is also Albert Einstein's birthday, Pi Day[citation needed]. This was confirmed by the show's creator John A. Davis in a Nick Magazine interview.
