History
[edit]S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) was inaugurated in 1981 by the then British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, as the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's [3] Institute for Master of Management Studies (MMS). Students from the first batch of 1983 were placed in several top companies, including BPCL, HDFC Ltd., Johnson and Johnson, Wipro, Asian Paints, Nerolac Paints Ltd., and Godrej and Boyce.
In 1986, Dr. M.L. Shrikant joined the institute as the Dean and led SPJIMR for almost three decades, introducing new and innovative methods of teaching and imparting management education.
In 1992, SPJIMR acquired autonomous status. Post the institute’s delinking from the University of Mumbai, the MMS programme was renamed as PGDM.
In 1994 and 1995, new programmes – Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) and Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential (ADMAP) – were launched, respectively. In 1998, SPJIMR launched ‘Gita Shibir’, led by Dr. M.L. Shrikant. The programme has been renamed ‘Science of Spirituality’. In 2009, the PGDM programme was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). In 2010, SPJIMR’s three programmes were accredited by The Association of MBAs (AMBA). In 2023, a total of six programmes were accredited. In June 2015, Dr. M.L. Shrikant was succeeded by Dr. Ranjan Banerjee as the Dean of the institute. In 2018, SPJIMR received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The Delhi campus was also inaugurated in the same year with long-term and short-term programmes. In 2019, a new building was inaugurated with state-of-the-art classrooms, group work rooms, a Design Thinking Lab, a new library, and a Management Development Programme (MDP) room. It also has a new auditorium named after Dr. M.L. Shrikant. In September 2021, Dr. Varun Nagaraj took over as the Dean of the institute. In 2022, SPJIMR launched the four prestigious Centres of Practice: Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Development (CISD), Centre for Family Business and Entrepreneurship (CFBE), Wise Innovation Studio for Emerging Technologies (WISE Tech) and Centre for Wisdom in Leadership (CWIL). The same year, PGPMBM – an accelerated management programme for executives with less than five years of work experience – was launched. In August 2022, the PGDM Business Management (BM) batch was inaugurated. In 2023, SPJIMR introduced the PGDM online programme. This online programme is specifically designed for professionals who wish to pursue formal management education while maintaining their jobs and residing in their current locations. In July 2023, SPJIMR’s Wise Innovation Studio for Emerging Technologies (WISE Tech) inaugurated the Sunil Bhatia Start-up Resource Hub.
