Slyly (スラィリー, Surairii) is the mascot for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Nippon Professional Baseball's Central League. He's known for his visual resemblance to Phillie Phanatic, mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Overview
[edit]Created by Sesame Street creator Harrison/Erickson Inc., Slyly bears significant resemblance to the Phillie Phanatic, being a large, furry bird with a big snout and party horn for tongue.
Unlike the green Phanatic, however, he is a teal blue bird, with pink and green comb-shaped mane, and two party horn tongues instead of one. On some occasions, such as after big wins or player milestones, he appears in pink, with yellow nozzles and mane in blue and green – a transformation also known as Happy Slyly (ハッピースラィリー).
Slyly made his debut on July 29, 1997, in a game at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium between the Carp and the Chunichi Dragons. Unlike other NPB team mascots that enjoys having female or junior counterparts to do performances with, Slyly is the only costumed performing mascot for the Carp, while another mascot of the team, Carp Boy (カープ坊や, Kāpu bōya), only appears on logos and illustrations. Solos and duets with other teams' mascots aside, he occasionally has two or three Kuroko performers to accompany with his performances.

- During a game against the Yakult Swallows on June 13th, 2000, Swallows starter Kazuhisa Ishii experienced discomfort in his left shoulder through the 2nd inning and left the game. During the stoppage, catcher Atsuya Furuta came onto the mound to face Slyly in the batter's box. Slyly hit a single off Furuta's pitch.
- In 2006, the official Carp picture book "Home Run - the Adventure with Carp Boy and Slyly" was released. The story follows two characters, Slyly being one of the duo, as they fight off attacks from various beasts (a tiger, a dragon, a swallow, a giant and a star gang leader) representing other Central League teams[1].
- The suit actor preforming as Slyly is an American professional mascot performer[2].
- On September 4, 2011, during a Carp home game against the Dragons while circling the field on a segway during the 7th inning stretch, Slyly ran over a member of the ground crew, who was hospitalized for a week due to resulting injuries.
- On May 10, 2015, Slyly had one of his eyeballs falling off while performing during a road game at Koshien Stadium against the Tigers, and had it reattached by the staff. A similar incident occurred during an interleague road game at Yafuoku Dome[3]。
- In 2020, Slyly, along with other Central League mascots, made a cameo appearance in episode 35 of the anime series "Tomica Bond Combination Earth Granner".
