![]() | This template uses Lua: |
This template is used on the talk pages of pages covered under a contentious topic to notify editors to take care editing the page.
The template requires you to declare what contentious topic the page is covered under, by specifying a #decision code. If the page is covered by more than one contentious topic, you can include multiple parameters (for example, {{Contentious topics/talk notice|a-i|blp}}
)
You should place the template at the top of the talk page, below the header (if used) but above all other templates.
Anyone may place a contentious topics talk page notice, but only administrators may specify restrictions.[1]
The page it is placed on must be within the topic area of the contentious topic. Keep in mind that many topic areas are "broadly construed". Clarification of whether a page is in a topic area can be requested at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification and Amendment.
Use
You may use this on the article talk page.
{{Contentious topics/talk notice|code1|code2|code3}}
etc.
{{Contentious topics/talk notice|code1|code2|brief=yes|1RR=yes|0RR=yes|BRD=yes|placed-date=June 1, 2025}}

Styles
The default is a detailed message:
{{Contentious topics/talk notice|tpm}}
gives:
![]() | The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page is related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, which has been designated as a contentious topic. Editors who repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process may be blocked or restricted by an administrator. Editors are advised to familiarise themselves with the contentious topics procedures before editing this page. |
Alternatively there is a more concise, bold-print message:
{{Contentious topics/talk notice|tpm}}
Decision codes
If an article has sanctions but doesn't fit into one of the above topic areas, this template is unsuitable. Use {{Gs/talk notice}} instead.
Categorisation
The template places the page into Category:Wikipedia pages about contentious topics unless nocat=yes
is included. nocat
should only be used for examples.
Four different errors are tracked in Category:Wikipedia pages about contentious topics with errors:
- Category:Wikipedia pages with contentious topic restrictions without a placed date (1,048) – add the appropriate
|placed-date=
- Category:Wikipedia pages with an invalid contentious topic code (1) – {{Contentious topics/list}} contains all valid contentious topic codes
- Category:Wikipedia pages about a contentious topic mislabelled as protected (456) – remove the
|protection=
parameter - Category:Pages using an unknown contentious topics code (0) – provide at least one contentious topic code

- {{Gs/talk notice}}: an equivalent for when any general sanction is in use (for instance, Wikipedia community general sanctions).
