Block of anonymous user

Hi, I'm not familiar with how the block process works, but I noticed an anonymous user who posted comments on the Talk:Historicity_of_Jesus was blocked and their comments removed. I think the page is terribly biased and suffers from editor "ownership." I have backed off from editing, but keep hoping that more neutral editors will take notice and try to correct the article. Several anonymous editors have popped in over the past month, but don't seem to stay. Then I noticed that this anonymous user, 2001:b042:4005:525b:b11a:62ca:9f54:cd18, came in and insisted the article was biased and non-NPOV and got blocked. Yourself and @Yalma were both involved with that. I looked at the comments this user left, and their contributions, and I didn't see anything too strange. I didn't see them editing the primary article at all, just posting on the talk page. Additionally, the comments they left didn't seem inflammatory or anything. Then I read your talk pages and it said sometimes blocks are brought about for sometimes unseen things by editors. I don't give a rats patootie about this anonymous editor, but I do care greatly when a biased article, owned by biased editors, receives sudden attention out of nowhere by admins who remove comments by an editor asking for the article to be more neutral. I'm not trying to be hostile, I just really want to understand. Thanks for hearing me out. StarHOG (Talk) 22:24, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They've been evading blocks for disruptive editing for quite a while now. They're blocked for disruptive editing and harassment, e.g. following editors around and reverting them and calling them LTAs. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:14, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. It does help. I'm still a little confused, this address was the one you were blocking (2001:b042:4005:525b:b11a:62ca:9f54:cd18) but I don't see that on the pages identified. I guess I don't know enough about IP addressing, but does it equate to the pages you're directing me to? StarHOG (Talk) 21:44, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That link was that same editor editing from a different IP address. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 21:47, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I guess you have tools for determining that. It's good, I may not understand, but it isn't your job to teach me about ip addresses of users and tracking them. So thanks again.StarHOG (Talk) 21:49, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The protection log says it's indef ECP'd, but it doesn't appear to be. Twinkle says 'This page has been protected in the past: protection log (expired Invalid date)'. Are you able to reset the protection? I'm not sure what happened to cause the error. JayCubby 02:07, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it was deleted and recreated. I've restored protection. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 10:39, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request

BMN123 had another round of messing with the archives recently with 194.233.150.250, so if you could sort that again I'd appreciate it. As a request though I'd prefer if you refrained from protecting that page, since its the edits to the obvious targets that alert people monitoring the case to check for other edits in less obvious places. Thanks again, 184.152.65.118 (talk) 06:28, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorted, thanks. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 10:46, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection

I thanked you for this action, but I note that you protected the article with the new, contentious content retained. Was that your intention? JoJo Anthrax (talk) 15:15, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Its not "contentious content", it content designed to bring the article into compliance with WP:BLP. MasterBlasterofBarterTown (talk) 15:18, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WP:WRONGVERSION and all that. At this point it probably needs a widely advertised RFC since this is a whole thing. Also, looking back at old BLPN threads, I see I may be minorly involved in this since I did some BLP cleanup and removed the AATIP stuff and discussed it a bit at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive356#Luis Elizondo a year and a half ago. Didn't see the article edits in my normal "check past 500 edits before acting", and didn't recall the BLPN stuff until I just checked for discussion on this topic. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:24, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WP:WRONGVERSION and all that. Noted. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 15:34, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Communications to ScottishFinnishRadish

Can I conference with you? You are the one to block my person for Sport BOXING edits. The period of the block was six days. It's like 12 days at this point. Will you be open to hearing me? John Wilkinson New Britain, CT. I founded Boxing at Central CT State College in 1980 program went for 13 years as a part of the NCBA program. Been heavy involved with the Sport for more than 50 years at this point. 2006 I founded a Boxing Advocacy the UWBCAFO-I still rolling with it. Had a 50-50 W-L career myself for 54 contest. I'm open to listening, but I'm not sure what article you're talking about. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 10:53, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not certain why you protected the talk page since the only IP that has been editing there is the IP itself. I personally would have just revoked TPA and kept the block for only a month, but I was just curious about your thinking. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:00, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

3 months is a long time to pull tpa from a school IP. A month of protection will hopefully give them something better to do, and allow for good faith editors on that IP communicate sooner. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 19:07, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I blocked for a month without TPA since I thought that would be long enough to deter them, since they were last blocked for a week, but if you fee like they should be blocked for 3 months that's fine by me. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:20, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

SFR, this account whom you blocked is an admitted single-purpose sock account, whom I had asked to email arbcom to notify you all of their main accounts, and to not edit IPA and other CTOP areas until someone verified that their use of alternate account was legitimate. They agreed to that while ignoring, at least, the second part. In any case, can you check if they did indeed email arbcom and/or if anything needs to be done wrt their other accounts (yes, plural)? Abecedare (talk) 15:31, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is no email, and I already ran a CU which didn't kick up much. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:40, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll drop a note on their talkpage. Abecedare (talk) 15:47, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:Generalrelative rvt

Gee, I was going to respond to the ridiculous post that you reverted. I quite like the Karamazov quote and the follow up as it applies to the current attempt to remove library books, like To Kill a Mockingbird, simply because they might somehow upset some folks. Of course it was better to remove the BLP problem. O3000, Ret. (talk) 20:58, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sussywidget has moved Nicktoons (American TV channel) to NickSpongebob without discussing it first - I see no discussion about the move anywhere on the article's talk page, nor elsewhere on Wikipedia. Do you think you can reverse this move? The Grand Delusion(Send a message) 20:30, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This looks like a content dispute, so you should use the normal dispute resolution avenues. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 13:07, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Advice needed

When I was logging in today, I received an email with a verification code I had to enter to access my account. The email said that "it looks like you are trying to log in from a new device on Wikipedia" which wasn’t the case. Seems like some sort malfunction somewhere but I don’t know whether I should inform WP technical support or who that is. I only added an email address to my account about six months ago; without it, would I have lost access to my account? Space4TCatHerder🖖 14:36, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think that without it you would just have lost the additional layer of security. I believe this is one of the security measures instituted after the huge amount of compromised accounts were found a while back. I've gotten the same emails from time to time logging in, even on devices/IPs I've used recently, so it could still be a bit buggy. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks — "just a little hiccup in our usually wonderful system" (quote, unknown origin). Space4TCatHerder🖖 16:45, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question

Sorry to bother you, don't know if this is trivial/unimportant. I don't have an Email associated with my account. Nor do I, if possible, have an inclination to have an Email. I wanted to request Oversight, but it seems like, without an Email, there's nothing I can do. How ought I to proceed? Pibx (talk) 16:32, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is a bit of a pickle, since you really don't want to make it more visible. I'm pretty sure you can report via IRC, but failing that you'll need to let an oversighter know on their talk page. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 16:44, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, letting Oversighters know on their Talk Page, hopefully won't create more visibility. I won't mention any diffs, so may be, it will be ok. Pibx (talk) 16:47, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The user in question, seems to be spam only. Pibx (talk) 16:47, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hope this is not inappropriate. User named Shreebajarangsena. Pibx (talk) 18:09, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
They are already blocked, I'm unsure what would need oversighting. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:16, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Their edits. Semms to be spam. Why is it showing up in the Edit History? Pibx (talk) 18:19, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We don't remove things from the history except in rare circumstances. See WP:CRD and WP:OSPOL for details. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:21, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I will be posting any more things related to this topic, at least related to this user. Just wanted to say that if the edit history is checked and one of the earlier revisions are clicked, there are links to a Website whose Domain Name is the same/similar to the Username. Ditto Social Media. Pibx (talk) 18:28, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User: Rtyss

Hi there. It may be early days, but this new user seems to be making changes which may be test, vandalism or just disruptive. I have given a welcome, and a level 1 warning, but of course they may not notice that. Tony Holkham (Talk) 11:10, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They haven't done anything to call down more action than that, so we'll just have to keep an eye on them and help them if they are acting in good faith. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 12:21, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Thank you. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:24, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Demi-Herculean tasks

Hi ScottishFinnishRadio; Nice of you to do the help edit on the Trump article during the last week. There is a long RfC now overdue which has been listed for RfC help on the Donald Trump talk page, now going on 60-90 days in the waiting period window; since you are not a participant in that RfC then might you consider looking at it sometime over the next week or two if time allows? ErnestKrause (talk) 14:47, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

All set. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:08, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thanks for rving that nasty edit. Do you mind if I ask for rd-ing some related residue there? I think they had an IP sock to modify it after the initial edit. Borgenland (talk) 15:17, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the modified version quite meets the threshold to revdel as it's more run-of-the-mill vandalism. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:24, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

2409:40d4::/34

Hi ScottishFinnishRadish, I saw you made a two-week hard block on 2409:40d4::/34 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)). This is a really wide range for a hard block, and I think it may cause a significant amount of collateral damage (saw one appeal at UTRS so far). Any chance we could downgrade it to a soft block? Mz7 (talk) 03:17, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We can, but then it will be far less effective. If you'd like to downgrade I won't object, though. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 09:18, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mz7, I did end up softening this block. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:23, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
