Ginny & Georgia is an American comedy-drama television series created by Sarah Lampert that was released on Netflix on February 24, 2021. In April 2021, the series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on January 5, 2023. In May 2023, the series was renewed for a third and fourth season. The third season premiered on June 5, 2025. fourth season premieres May 18, 2027.

Free spirited Georgia Miller arrives to Wellsbury, Massachusetts with her teenage daughter Ginny and 9-year-old son Austin after her husband dies. On her first day at her new school, Ginny faces off with her English teacher and is befriended by Maxine, through whom she meets Maxine's bad-boy twin brother Marcus and a friend of Max's, Hunter. She later kisses Marcus but also agrees to go on a date with Hunter. Meanwhile, Georgia meets Mayor Paul Randolph; Georgia has money problems because Kenny's ex wife contests the will. Ginny gets home from the date with Hunter, but she has sex with Marcus, losing her virginity. Georgia attends a board meeting held by the Mayor and blackmails Joe into giving organic food to the schools at a low price; this gets her a job at the mayor's office. Flashbacks throughout the episode reveal how Georgia was abused as a teenager, how she became pregnant with Ginny, and that her husband's crash was caused by her poisoning his smoothie with wolfsbane.

Ginny has a hard time fitting in as Max's friends, Abby and Norah, seem hostile. Georgia starts her new job and befriends Nick. In class, Austin gets bullied by Zach, but he has an opportunity to shine when he's named Star of the Week. At work, Georgia's team has difficulties with the approval for the new town weed dispensary, because the shop is in a historic building with no AC. Ginny takes a contraceptive pill; later, she hangs out with Max's friends in the hopes of meeting Hunter, Ginny proceeds to get stoned with the others to make them like her, but still feels an outsider. Back at home, Ginny practices self-harm by burning herself. The following day, Max auditions for the school musical and Ginny goes shopping with Abby and Norah and she witnesses them shoplifting. To fit in, Ginny steals too, but she's caught and Georgia arrives, accusing the shop owner of racially profiling her daughter; Georgia resolves the situation, advising Ginny not to trust the other girls after they pretended they weren't stealing. While out, Georgia learns that the troubling historic building actually has AC after meeting Cynthia at her office, who was the one against the dispensary; Georgia also has Joe hire Ginny at Blue Farm. In the meantime, Austin brings his incarcerated father Gil's letters for his Star of the Week project at school, saying his dad is a wizard in Azkaban. Ginny has a breakdown with Marcus over feeling like an outcast and reveals he was her first time. Abby and Norah pay a visit to Ginny and apologize and they become friends. The dispensary opens, much to the dislike of Cynthia. It is revealed that Georgia writes Austin the letters pretending to be his father, but she's also seen using her son's security number to request a new credit card. Kenny's ex-wife hires PI Gabriel Cordova to look into Georgia. Flashbacks reveal how teenage Georgia was taught to shoot a gun by a woman in the biker gang and how she robbed a gas station, before returning to her house and shooting her abusive stepdad's hand.

Georgia accepts to have Ginny participate in Sophomore sleepover and offers Ellen to chaperone with her when she sees the money for the tickets, but she can't find a babysitter for Austin; however, Paul agrees to babysit him. Ginny starts her new job at Blue Farm and Max, who got the lead in the musical, crushes on Riley, a fellow theater kid. Excited about the Sleepover, Ginny and her friends text about it; it is revealed Abby actually has body image issues and tapes her legs to make them look thinner. At the sleepover, Ginny and her new friends dance and take pictures in a photo booth: Hunter joins Ginny and he kisses her. Georgia looks at Ginny, but Ginny asks her to go away as she feels embarrassed in front of her friends; Ginny, Max, Abby and Norah decide to get matching ponytails, but the hairdresser ruins Ginny's hair and she runs to the bathroom, where she finds Marcus hiding. As Ginny fixes her hair, they talk and Marcus reveals he struggles with depression after his best friend died the previous year. Georgia offers to take the money from the tickets to the principal office, stealing some of it. Max confesses her feelings to Riley and kisses her, but Riley tells her she's straight: a distraught Max confides in Georgia, who comforts her. Georgia finds Ginny in the bathroom and the two quarrel, Ginny accusing her mom of being jealous because she's experiencing something Georgia never has. In the meantime, Paul bonds with Austin over football, but he finds the credit cards in Austin's name. After the sleepover, Hunter asks Ginny to be his girlfriend and she accepts, while Max meets Sophie. Flashbacks reveal teenage Georgia finding out she's pregnant in a bathroom of a gas station and immediately after, meeting a boy named Joe who's on a school trip: Joe gives her half of his sandwich and tells her he's from Wellsbury and that he'd love to have a farm with animals, while Georgia recounts how she wished for a magic horse named Milkshake when she was younger; before leaving, Joe gifts his Ray-bans to Georgia.

In her first relationship, Ginny desperately wants Hunter to like her, as he prepares for Battle of the Bands. At a board meeting, Georgia proposes to host a Casino Night instead of a baking sale to raise more money for the schools, while at work she gets questioned by HR about the credit card in Austin's name Paul saw: Georgia tells it was Austin's father, Gil, who did it and reveals he's incarcerated for embezzling from his company. Feeling guilty, Paul agrees to Casino Night. While hanging out with her friends, Ginny discusses feeling like Hunter doesn't really like her and then how porn gives a distorted image of sex to men, who never prioritize female pleasure: Marcus overhears the conversation. Ginny sends Hunter an enticing photo but, when he fails to reply, she sends it to Marcus instead, starting a conversation that ends up in sexting and Ginny masturbating for the first time. Georgia and Nick struggle to find funds to host Casino Night after the organization of the event is no longer under Cynthia's control, but they manage to come through thanks to Georgia's resourcefulness and the night is a success, with Georgia raising four time the amount of money as the previous year, although keeping some for herself. In English class, Ginny chooses to discuss Lydia Bennett from Pride and Prejudice, but she feels personally attacked when Hunter doesn't agree and shames the character. At Battle of the Bands, Ginny finds out Hunter's feelings after he sings a song about her and the two reconcile. Paul asks Georgia on a date. Flashbacks reveal teenage Georgia meeting Zion's parents after finding out she's pregnant.

Ginny is finally popular and well-adjusted in school after Hunter's song goes viral, deciding for a group Halloween costume with her friends and helping Max out with Sophie, inviting her to their party. Ginny also invites Bracia, one of the few other Black kids, but she keeps ignoring Marcus. While at work, Ginny overhears Padma saying Marcus doesn't want to be in a relationship with her and she proposes MANG go to the party dressed as Britney Spears. Georgia and Paul go on a date at Blue Farm, but Cynthia sees them. Ginny meets Hunter's family and finds out she's to be thinking about colleges and recommendation letters. At the Halloween Fair, Paul talks about his innovative plans for Wellsbury if he's re-elected, but Cynthia reveals she saw him out with Georgia and announces her candidacy for mayor. At the party, Ginny and her friends shine in their Britney costumes, but Abby makes herself throw up after receiving an ugly comment on her appearance and Ginny reads spiteful comments about her under Hunter's video, burning herself in the bathroom. A drunk Max tries to get Sophie to make out with her, but Sophie leaves; Bracia comments on Ginny's costume, implying that Ginny can dress up like that because she's white-passing. Ginny takes Max home and looks as Marcus takes care of his sister, later apologizes to him for ignoring him and the two agree to being friends. Georgia and Paul have sex and Georgia comes home to find her sister Maddie, who she hasn't seen in more than 10 years; Ginny is shocked to discover yet another of Georgia's secrets. The PI arrives in Wellsbury. Austin gets teased by Zach and violently stabs him in the hand with a pencil. Flashbacks reveal how Zion's parents offered to take custody of Ginny but Georgia leaves their house not to have her daughter taken away from her.

After Austin's attack, he's suspended from school and has to attend therapy, but Georgia doesn't feel there's any need and fights with Ginny on this. Maddie's presence forces Georgia to confront her traumatic past, while Austin bonds with his cousin Caleb. Ginny talks to Hunter about her disapproval for her mother's secrets, which included her aunt Maddie. Nick tells Georgia about Jesse, a man he met at Casino Night, and later introduces them; Max is pining over Sophie. A stressed Georgia goes to Blue Farm and talks to Joe, before being joined by Maddie and proceeding to drink together and revive their bond; in the meantime, Ginny talks to Max and Marcus about her new relatives and receives more sympathy from Marcus than from her best friend. Joe and Georgia take a drunk Maddie home as Paul arrives and confesses his feelings for Georgia. Georgia manages to sneak into Maddie's phone and finds out her sister is in Wellsbury to spy on her for PI Cordova who's paying her: Georgia finds a picture of Cordova, who is revealed to be Jesse. Georgia kicks Maddie out, offering her double the money to leave: Maddie reveals that after Georgia left home as a teen, her abusive father targeted Maddie instead. Max apologizes to Sophie and the two kiss; Ginny comes home early and goes through Georgia's room, to find other secrets: she finds photos of Georgia as a child and a gun. Georgia comes home early too and hears noises in her room, she heads upstairs with a gun from her purse: mother and daughter stand in front of one another, each with a gun in their hands. Georgia tells Ginny she keeps her secrets to protect her, but Ginny acts annoyed. Georgia burns the photos of her as a girl and Ginny calls her dad. Flashbacks show teenage Georgia working and living in a pension, an older man named Anthony Green being interested in Georgia and her starting a poker gambling ring; shortly after, young Maddie arrives after having run from home too, but Georgia asks her to leave when Maddie leaves little Ginny in the bathtub unattended. Maddie steals all of Georgia's money and leaves.

Ginny turns 16. Paul debates Cynthia and later plays with Austin and advises him about his conflict with Zach. Georgia is embezzling at the office, and calls to hire someone called Marty for a secret job. Georgia's family quarrels over dinner; after dinner Paul visits Georgia and stays overnight. Georgia arranges a party and sleepover with Ginny's friends Max, Norah, and Abby, to keep Ginny's birthday weekend celebration under her protection; the party is crashed by Nick, with Gabriel in tow, and Georgia calls Gabriel by his real name. Gabriel gets a phone call about medical tests that showed Georgia's husband to be in excellent health shortly before his death. Ginny's friends, having raided Georgia's liquor cabinet, sneak with Ginny over to Maxine's home and are joined by others, mainly their boyfriends and girlfriend, for a drinking party while Maxine's parents are away. Georgia finds out and reports them, and they're raided by police. Paul goes to bail Ginny out. Georgia tells Ginny about how her stepfather abused her, causing her to run away from home, and later adds that she hasn't gotten her inheritance and is broke. Austin goes back to school but loses his nerve and runs off. Flashbacks show a time when Georgia was arrested and nearly lost custody of Ginny.

Cynthia releases a defamatory video against Paul and Georgia, making Paul lose supporters. Padma breaks up with Marcus, while in English class Ginny is required to write an essay for a big prize. Ginny's dad Zion, a travel photographer, arrives in town; Ginny fears her parents getting back together, despite Georgia's commitment to Paul. Paul comes to dinner and meets Zion. It is revealed that Abby's parents are divorcing, but none of her friends see Abby's struggles. Marcus seeks advice from Max and Sophie, determined to tell Ginny about his feelings for her. Zion takes Ginny to an open mic poetry night in Boston, where he promises he's going to settle down to be close to her. Georgia sees Marcus climb through Ginny's window and confronts her about it, sparking a big fight. Austin keeps pretending to go to school to not face Zach. Ginny presents her essay to her English class, it being a poem: however, the teacher declares Hunter to be the winner and calls Ginny's work too unconventional. Max and Sophie have sex, while Ginny and Hunter have a huge fight about Ginny's poem and their different experiences and treatments as non-white people. Ginny has a heart-to-heart with Zion, who encourages her to be her truest self; Abby asks all the girls to meet at Blue Farm and accuses them of having left her alone in her time of need, so the girls make peace and promise to be there for each other. Cordova discovers Georgia has a plant of wolfsbane and that it can cause heart attacks. Cynthia releases an interview accusing Georgia of having guns in her house, angering Paul, who is against guns, so Georgia sleeps with Zion. Ginny sees her parents together and has a meltdown, burning herself; Marcus sees her through the window, and Ginny gets mad at him, humiliating him. Marcus gets on his motorbike despite having no license and drives into a ditch. Flashbacks show Georgia marrying Anthony Green to provide a stable environment for Ginny and not lose custody of her, but Anthony doesn't want Georgia to leave the apartment. Trapped, Georgia drugs his drink and watches as he dies, contemplating calling 911 before putting down the phone.

Ginny feels guilty and anxious about Marcus' crash, and he comes home from the hospital with a concussion. Georgia keeps Zion at a distance after sleeping together and apologizes to Paul. Cordova presents his hypothesis that Georgia poisoned Kenny with wolfsbane to give him a heart attack and asks to excavate the body to test for it, while Georgia texts Marty. While playing with Zion, Austin finds his letters for his dad in Georgia's closet. Ginny talks to Joe about Marcus and seeks his advice. Georgia and Ginny discuss Zion, Georgia promising nothing will happen. The Millers have dinner with the Bakers: Ginny visits convalescent Marcus in his room but encounters Padma who tells her Marcus likes her. Zion confesses to Georgia he wants to settle down with her. Georgia helps Paul win some support back by organizing a town rally aided at bettering Wellsbury, while she keeps embezzling. Cynthia sees Georgia at the bank cashing the embezzled money. Sophie breaks up with Max, leaving Max a mess, while Zion tells Ginny he's got an apartment in Boston to stay close. The girls rush to comfort Max, but Ginny visits Marcus again and asks him to forgive her, scared he's mad because he didn't text her back; Marcus tells her he lost his phone in the accident, and they embrace, but they are discovered by Abby, who begs Ginny to stop and not tell Max, for it would break the friend group apart. After the town rally, Georgia tries to break up with Paul but Paul instead asks her to marry him, saying he sees her who she truly is, and Georgia accepts. When she gets home, Georgia finds Zion leaving, saying he doesn't want to hold her back. Ginny tells Marcus she loves him, he reciprocates, and they have sex, after which Marcus tells Ginny he can help her if she wants. Cynthia sneaks into the mayor's office and finds proof that Georgia is embezzling money. Cordova finds Kenny's body missing from his grave, and Austin shows Ginny the letters Georgia never sent, so Ginny helps him forward them. Max finds Marcus's lost phone and sees Ginny's messages, finding out Ginny has been involved with her brother all along. Flashbacks show Georgia and Ginny showing up at Zion's place after not being in touch for a year. They live together for a while but Georgia can see that she's holding Zion back from achieving his dreams, so she tells him to go and achieve them.

Despite Georgia and Paul's engagement, things are very tense for the Millers: Austin keeps on missing school and wandering off, while Ginny finds herself cut off from her friend group. With the election approaching, Cynthia publicly accuses Georgia of embezzling money, but HR concludes that there's no money missing, though Nick notices a huge deposit done that morning for the same amount that was missing. After being once again singled out by her English teacher, Ginny runs into Bracia in the bathroom and talks to her about how difficult it can be to be Black in an all-white town. Hunter tells Ginny he doesn't want to break up and loves her; Joe notices Ginny's Ray-bans and she tells him Georgia received them from a stranger in a gas station. Joe reads this as a sign and is ready to declare his feelings to Georgia, but she comes in and he finds out about her engagement to Paul. Ginny goes to Max's musical to talk to her, but Max reveals she knows about her and Marcus and confronts her on lying; Ginny accuses Abby of telling Max, who gets angry with Abby too. Hunter intervenes in the fight, and Abby tells him how Ginny cheated on him with Marcus, who arrives and says it was all a mistake before getting punched by Hunter. Ginny is heartbroken by Marcus' words and leaves him. Max tells Ellen about Ginny and Marcus, and Ellen confronts Georgia about it. Georgia talks to Ginny, who erupts, accusing Georgia of lying, driving Zion away, and faking Austin's letters, which Ginny reveals she mailed much to Georgia's disbelief. Ginny blackmails her English teacher into signing a recommendation letter for her by accusing him of being racist, while Georgia finds out Austin has been skipping school. Cut out by her friends, Ginny spends time with Bracia; at work, she receives a visit from Gabriel, who reveals he's investigating Georgia and asks Ginny to come forward with information, fearing Georgia may be dangerous, but Ginny protects her mother. Ginny comes home to Georgia leaving for the announcement of the new mayor and decides to run away; she and Austin burn the wolfsbane and steal Marcus' bike and run off, just as Paul wins the election. Cynthia comes home to her husband, who is in a coma, and Georgia reveals to Gabriel that she put Kenny's ashes in the fireworks.

For the past 2 weeks, Ginny and Austin have been living with Zion in Boston. Ginny has nightmares about Georgia, who pretends to be fine with her kids gone. Ginny's grandparents come to Zion's house for Thanksgiving dinner, and Ginny overhears them expressing concerns about her mental well-being as they leave. Georgia goes with Paul to his parents' house for Thanksgiving dinner and overhears them talk about how she has too much "baggage", though he is insistent on marrying her. Ginny continues to burn herself. Georgia calls Zion and the two agree that the kids will come home for "Friyay", a tradition of frying various foods the day after Thanksgiving that they invented when Ginny was young. Ginny has a panic attack when she finds out that she has to see Georgia again. She confides in Zion about her self-harm and asks if she can keep living with him, which he agrees to on the conditions that he tell Georgia about it and Ginny go to therapy. When they arrive back in Wellsbury, Ginny returns Marcus's bike and apologizes for stealing it and ignoring his texts. Zion, Georgia, Paul, Ginny, and Austin have an awkward dinner. Meanwhile, Abby goes to Max's house for their yearly post-Thanksgiving brunch tradition, but Max is still angry with her and kicks her out. Georgia confronts Ginny about thinking she is an 'evil mom'. Zion tells Georgia that Ginny is moving in with him, but she refuses to allow it, so he attempts to tell her about Ginny's self harm. To stop him, Ginny agrees to move back home. Gabriel discovers that Georgia was previously married to a man named Anthony Green who went missing. Zion books a therapy session for Ginny. Marcus climbs into Ginny's room, and the two share a deep conversation before Ginny asks him to stay the night. Flashbacks show Georgia coming home on the night of the election to find her kids gone and her wolfsbane flowers burned. They also show Georgia working on Thanksgiving and inventing Friyay so Ginny could still have a nice holiday.

Georgia asks Paul to move in, agreeing to not tell the kids yet, but she ends up telling them anyway. On Ginny's first day back at school, her friends ignore her. Georgia plans to join the Neighborhood Club but finds out she needs a current member to sponsor her, so she visits Cynthia, whose husband is terminally ill. She tries to empathize with Cynthia because of Kenny's death, but Cynthia deduces that she is just there to ask for the sponsorship. Zion takes Ginny to her first therapy session, where she talks about her childhood and her self-harm. Nick confronts Georgia about her embezzling, but she reminds him that telling Paul about it would eliminate his plausible deniability. Ginny goes to Blue Farm and convinces Joe to give her her job back. Cynthia tells the Neighborhood Club not to let Georgia in. Paul tells Ginny that he wants to be there for her and Austin, mentioning that Austin's father Gil took credit cards out in his name. Ginny looks up her credit score and realizes that it was Georgia, not Gil. The next morning, Ginny makes Paul a smoothie, reminding Georgia of the one that she killed Kenny with. Flashbacks show Georgia going to her old biker gang, traumatized, to get rid of Anthony Green's body after accidentally killing him.

Tensions rise after Georgia learns that Ginny knows what happened to Kenny. Austin's teacher tells Georgia that Austin is behind in class and that he might have anxiety and need counseling, but Georgia brushes it off. Marcus asks Ginny why she has been so secretive lately, but she brushes him off, so he leaves. She struggles to tell him about her feelings so she writes a poem for him. Abby and Ginny skip class and smoke together. Georgia finally convinces Cynthia to get her into the Neighborhood Club. Ginny finally confesses to Marcus that Georgia killed Kenny, and he promises not to tell anyone. Georgia tells her that she killed him to protect her family and would do it again if necessary; the two make up. Flashbacks show Georgia failing to make friends with Ginny at her side. She uses her to steal clothes.

After Ginny and Georgia make up, Georgia catches Marcus sneaking in and talks about his intentions with Ginny. Ginny plans a party for Marcus's birthday. Paul and Georgia clash about parenting techniques when he finds out that Marcus snuck in and she doesn't want Austin to go to counseling. Max struggles with still having feelings for Sophie, who now has a boyfriend, and is oblivious to a girl named Silver liking her. Not wanting to see Tom because he's forgotten her name, Cynthia stays at Blue Farm all day and bonds with Joe, who is struggling with his unrequited love for Georgia. Georgia apologizes to Ellen, and they make up. Paul asks why Georgia won't get Austin help, resulting in an argument. She asks Ginny to be her maid of honor. Norah makes up with Abby and Ginny, disappointing Max. Gabriel discovers that Georgia was never investigated regarding Anthony Green's death. Ginny and Max argue, but make up when Ginny tells her loves Marcus. Marcus and Max have a joint birthday party, where Ginny and Hunter finally talk about their breakup and get closure. Marcus asks Ginny to be his girlfriend. Ginny calls her therapist to stop herself from self-harming and has a mental breakdown. Flashbacks show Georgia lying about Ginny being sick so they can stay in the house longer.

Georgia is planning the wedding, a Neighborhood Club party, and a fundraiser for women and children. Ginny's English teacher asks her to pick a book to add to the syllabus about the Black American experience. Georgia apologizes to Nick and asks him to be her bridesman. Georgia decides on the theme of murder mystery for her party, which Ginny finds sadistic. Ginny and Zion have dinner, and he advises her on what to do about the book. Georgia arranges for Zion and Paul to meet and talk things out. Ginny and her therapist talk about Georgia as a mother. Joe listens in on Paul and Zion's conversation about Georgia; Zion asks him to look out for Ginny and keep him in the loop. Paul argues with Georgia about a gun he found in the house; he throws it out, and she claims it's the only one she has. Ginny stops Georgia from getting her English teacher fired by framing him. At an open mic at Blue Farm, Ginny reads a poem about her negative feelings toward Georgia, who walks in and is upset after hearing it. Cynthia kisses Joe, but instantly regrets it. Ginny and Georgia walk in on Zion on a date with his girlfriend Simone, and Georgia panics and accidentally invites Zion's family to the Christmas Eve dinner. Austin finds a gun when looking for presents. Gabriel discovers that Georgia's lawyer has a connection to her old gang. Paul and Georgia argue about how she doesn't respect him. At dinner, Georgia feels attacked by Zion's mother, who criticizes the way she raised Ginny, so she leaves. Joe cheers her up, and she makes up with Paul. Cynthia and Joe have sex. Gil arrives on Christmas and claims he's changed. Georgia reads Ginny's notebook and discovers that she self harms. She forces Ginny to show her the scars, and they talk about why she does it. She apologizes for missing it and they cry together. Flashbacks show Gil buying gifts for Georgia and Ginny.

Marcus begins to act differently and comes to school drunk. Georgia joins Ginny's therapy session, and they both feel misunderstood by the other. Max realizes Marcus is suffering because he doesn't think Ginny should like him. Gil tells Cynthia that Georgia framed him for the embezzlement she did so he would get sent to prison. Ginny and Max argue when Max doesn't realize what Ginny is going through in class; Max later apologizes. Ginny throws Georgia a surprise bachelorette party. Flashbacks show Gil telling Georgia that he embezzles from his company. Georgia wears face paint as Zion and Gil meet on Ginny's birthday. After they leave, she removes the face paint, revealing that Gil has physically abused her.

Georgia intentionally causes Cynthia's husband Tom to die by smothering him with a pillow; unbeknownst to her, Austin witnesses this. Ginny tells Marcus she knows he doesn't want to be with her, and he says he doesn't want to hold her back; she begs him not to break up with her, but he does. Max and Silver kiss, and Max gets closure with Sophie. Max and Marcus hear a gunshot. Flashbacks show Joe standing up to a bully.

Three days before the gunshot, Ginny struggles to get used to her new English class as the other students don't take it seriously. Nick feels Gabriel is pulling away. Georgia tells Ginny about Anthony, saying it was an accident. She overhears Max and Marcus talk about his feelings. Gil blackmails Georgia into letting him see Austin. Cynthia tells Georgia about sleeping with Joe. After Georgia kills Tom, Austin distances himself. Joe asks her if she ever liked him, and she hints that she did. She comforts Ginny after her breakup. Gil comes in and throws her to the floor, so Austin shoots him with the gun he found. They clean up the house and sew Gil's arm up before Paul gets home. Georgia tells the kids about Gil's abuse over the years but chooses not to tell Paul. She calls the wedding company and cancels. Gabriel finds out that Georgia was with Tom when he died and reports it to the police as a suspected murder. Flashbacks show Georgia packing to run away from Gil, but finding out she's pregnant before she can leave.

Ginny finds out from Max that Marcus is depressed. Marcus tells Georgia that he will keep her secret about the murder. Paul, angry and overwhelmed, leaves the house. Ginny goes to Marcus's house and tells him that she's here for him. Later, Paul texts Georgia to meet him in the office. She arrives to see a cop and lawyer there and assumes she will be arrested. Gil arrives, and Paul tells him that he is a convicted felon and will go back to prison if he continues to harass and blackmail Georgia. He tells Georgia that he still wants to marry her. Georgia tells Ginny about the good news and that she forgot to tell Paul she cancelled the wedding at the Mount. Not having told the guests about the cancellation, they find a new venue. The wedding day arrives, and Ginny arranges for Georgia to be transported by Joe's horse, Milkshake, in a carriage. Gabriel tells Nick the truth about his identity and Georgia's crimes. Paul and Georgia get married and Ginny gives her maid of honor speech at the reception. Joe and Marcus share a moment outside the reception venue. The newlyweds share their first dance, but Georgia gets arrested in the middle of the dance for Tom's murder. As she is taken away in a police car, Austin is confused and upset, saying he didn't tell anyone about what he saw the night Tom died. Flashbacks show Gil throw Georgia to the ground, and Georgia threatening Gil with a gun, before Gil wrestles it out of her hands.

Abby, believing Sam is also bulimic, asks Sam to touch the tape Abby uses to bind her thighs; Sam confesses she has a crush on Abby and they kiss. After seeing Ginny off to the dance, Lynette and Georgia share a heart to heart and hug. After encouragement from his family, Marcus attends the dance and kisses Ginny. Abby is shocked to see Sam and Press attend the dance together and gets drunk with Marcus in Mr. Gitten's classroom. When Ginny tries to talk to him, Marcus says he doesn't love her anymore. Marcus confides in Max that he can't remember anything from the dance, including kissing Ginny, and broke up with her to prioritize his worsening mental health. Austin, struggling with school, tries to get suspended as well. Ginny asks Georgia to enroll him in therapy, but Georgia says they can't until after the trial. Georgia hosts "Lawn Fest", a political event to celebrate small businesses that she hopes will rekindle her friendship with Joe, but Joe tells her he still needs space because of his feelings for her. Ginny goes on a date with Wolfe, a boy from her poetry class, but gives him a fake name. On the first day of Georgia's trial, Gabriel takes the stand and accuses her of being a serial killer.

To dodge reporters and her classmates, Ginny skips school by going on a date with Wolfe to a science museum. Zion confronts Ginny about Gabriel's testimony, which Ginny accidentally confirms. Neither Paul nor Zion attend the second day of the trial. Georgia's lawyer manages to get Gabriel's testimony thrown out, but reporters continue to harass the family. Ginny discovers a poem she wrote referencing Georgia's crimes has gone viral online. She goes home to self-harm, but Georgia manages to distract and stop her. Wolfe learns Ginny's real name and story but doesn't mind. Child protective services arrives, revealing Gil and Zion requested an investigation and the removal of the kids from Georgia's care.

Angrily, she tells Zion that Gil is abusive and that it's his fault Austin is living with him. Ginny goes to a party with Wolfe where she has sex with him. Marcus visits Georgia to fix a window broken by a brick and tells her Ginny still needs her. In court, Georgia's lawyer suggests Tom choked to death accidentally, but this idea is contradicted by the court's medical experts. Feeling hopeless, Georgia calls Dr. Lily who reassures her that her kids love her and need her to fix her life. Joe visits Georgia and asks why she didn't implicate him as a suspect by revealing his affair with Cynthia; she tells him she never would. She tells him that her dad, who tried to kill her as a child, contacted her because he saw the news. Ginny discovers that she's pregnant.

Georgia's lawyer tells her it's optically important for her to bring supporters to the courtroom, especially Paul. Georgia tries but fails to do so. Abby develops a crush on her tutor, Tris, and goes on a date with her. Max distracts the reporters in front of Georgia's house so that Ginny can sneak in and tell her that she is pregnant. Georgia helps her take a second test and consider her options. Ginny chooses to have an abortion but does not want to tell anyone. Georgia asks Marcus to go for support. While Georgia is taking care of Ginny afterward, they learn the trial has been turned into a low budget movie. They inform Zion of the abortion, who reassures Ginny on her choice. Joe visits Georgia and they nearly kiss, but Joe pulls away. Paul decides to break up with Georgia to save his career, but when he visits to speak to her she shows him Ginny's pregnancy test and tells him she is pregnant.

During play rehearsals, Max grows closer to Sophie and kisses her while Bracia struggles to say "I love you" to Brian. Cynthia invites Austin to have a play date with Zach. She finds Zach's water bottle in the lost and found and steals an iPad from it as well. Abby and Ginny go to dinner with Abby's father and Anna, his new girlfriend. Upon learning Anna has already moved in, Abby runs away. Zion attends therapy with Ginny and learns Georgia raised her in homelessness; he informs Georgia that he will file for custody. Believing Georgia is pregnant, Paul cancels his plans to divorce her and tries to be a good partner. However, he later realizes she lied while speaking to Zion. Furious, he tells Georgia that she's selfish and that he and the kids are better off without her. Joe stops by to visit and Georgia informs him that she will run away that night. They have sex. Later, Georgia steals Marcus's motorcycle and cuts off her ankle monitor. She calls Ginny from prison to tell her that she turned herself in.

Production

Development

On August 13, 2019, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of ten episodes. The series comes from creator Sarah Lampert and showrunner Debra J. Fisher. Other executive producers include Anya Adams, Jeff Tahler, Jenny Daly, Holly Hines, and Dan March. Adams also directed the first two episodes of the series. Lampert penned the script while working at Madica Productions as the manager of development. The script was then sent to Critical Content and shared with Dynamic Television before touching down at Netflix. On April 19, 2021, Netflix renewed the series for a second season. On May 17, 2023, Netflix renewed the series for its third and fourth seasons with Sarah Glinski joining as the new showrunner, replacing Fisher.

Casting

Alongside the initial series announcement, it was reported that Brianne Howey, Antonia Gentry, Diesel La Torraca, Jennifer Robertson, Felix Mallard, Sara Waisglass, Scott Porter, and Raymond Ablack were cast as series regulars. On January 20, 2021, it was announced that Mason Temple was cast in a recurring role. In order to prepare for their roles, Robertson, Mallard and Waisglass learned American Sign Language. On January 28, 2022, it was reported that Aaron Ashmore was joining the cast in a recurring role for the second season. On September 13, 2024, Ty Doran and Noah Lamanna were cast in recurring capacities for the third season.

Filming

Principal photography for the series began on August 14, 2019, and ended on December 10, 2019. Filming took place in Toronto and Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. Filming for the second season began on November 29, 2021, and concluded on April 23, 2022. Filming for the third season began on April 29, 2024. On September 13, 2024, it was reported that filming for the third season had concluded.

Release

Ginny & Georgia premiered on February 24, 2021. The second season was released on January 5, 2023. The third season premiered on June 5, 2025.

Reception

Audience viewership

On April 19, 2021, Netflix announced that 52 million subscribers watched the first season of the series for the first 28 days after its release. In its first 28-days on Netflix, Ginny & Georgia was watched for 381 million hours globally.

On January 10, 2023, it was reported that the second season was at the top of Netflix Top 10 TV Chart for the week of January 2 to 8, 2023, with 180.47M hours viewed. For the week of January 9 to 15, the second season was at the top of Netflix Top 10 TV Chart again with 162.7M hours viewed for the week. Season 2 now resides in the all-time top 10 English language shows with 504.77 million hours watched globally in the first 28 days.

Following the release of season 2, the show featured in the Nielsen top 10s for eight weeks.

The third season drew 17.6 million viewers which landed at No.1 on Netflix Top 10, following the release.

For the first season, review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 68% based on 31 critic reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "If Ginny & Georgia can't quite pull off its tonally ambitious first season, it's at least entertaining to watch it try." Metacritic gave the first season a weighted average score of 62 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable".

Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave the first season a B− and wrote a review saying, "Ginny & Georgia wants us to love the way that Georgia always manages to stay one step ahead... Instead, I kept hoping that Child Protective Services would finally catch up." Melanie McFarland of Salon said, "playing with class conflict in a show like this is easy. Leaning into other essential American ugliness while permeating the plot's intrigue with black humor and snark is a more challenging knit. This show blends all of these emotional colors nicely while also ensuring that neither Ginny nor Georgia or anyone else comes off as one-dimensional." Allison Shoemaker at RogerEbert.com complimented the show's depiction of a 15-year-old. "The writers and Gentry together do an especially nice job of capturing the endless conflicting impulses that make being 15 such a nightmare and thrill; Ginny often struggles to understand herself, but it's clear that Gentry knows her intimately." Lucy Mangan of The Guardian labeled it, "Desperate Housewives meets Gilmore Girls meets Buffy". Proma Khosla of Mashable calls out "the magnetism of Georgia and anyone she meets, Max's tenderness, [and] the rollercoaster of adolescent female friendship" as key components of the show. Reviewing the series' first season for Rolling Stone, Alan Sepinwall gave a rating of 3/5. When comparing the series to Gilmore Girls, he said: "There's also one area where Ginny & Georgia has a clear leg up on its predecessor: It understands from the jump that it's not especially healthy to have a mom who wants to be your best friend and is reluctant to fully grow up herself."

The second season has a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 10 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. On February 25, 2021, the term "Oppression Olympics" went viral on Twitter in response to a scene where the characters Hunter and Ginny use the term in an argument. The scene was received negatively by viewers, who criticized its commentary on race and stereotypes, with many calling the exchange "embarrassing".

On March 1, 2021, a line in the first-season finale drew attention, spoken by Ginny to Georgia: "You go through men faster than Taylor Swift." This drew backlash from fans, who condemned the line as being misogynistic and an example of slut-shaming the musician; the phrase "Respect Taylor Swift" trended worldwide on Twitter. Swift herself responded very negatively, tweeting, "Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY [sic]."
