Fernando Semenzato is an Argentine-American television executive and content producer, known for his work in Latin and North American pay television and streaming. He has held senior creative roles at Cartoon Network Latin America, National Geographic, and The Walt Disney Company, overseeing original programming and development.
Early life
Semenzato was born in Argentina.[1] He began his career in advertising in the early 1990s, working for agencies such as Lautrec, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Ratto/BBDO.[2] In 1998, he joined Turner Broadcasting and moved to Atlanta, working with Cartoon Network’s Latin American division.[3]
Career
Cartoon Network Latin America
For Cartoon Network's Latin America Division, Semenzato served as Vice President of Creative Services. During his tenure, he was responsible for implementing all on air promotions, and writing and producing scripts. One such project was "The Rubbles", a reality TV spoof of "The Flintstones." Under his direction, the channel received numerous awards for its branding campaigns, including over a dozen Promax/BDA, a FIAP award, and a One Show award. [3][4]
Fox Latin American Channels
In 2004, Semenzato joined Fox Latin American Channels as Vice President of Content.[5] He created the adult animation block No Molestar and supervised series such as Tiempo Final, Cumbia Ninja, and Alessandra a tu manera—the latter winning a Martín Fierro Award.[6]
National Geographic (2016–2019)
In 2016, he was named Vice President of Marketing at National Geographic Latin America and in 2018, VP of Development and Production. He led the transformation of the channel’s branding to reach younger audiences[7] and developed original franchises including:
- Alerta Aeropuerto (airport security docuseries),[8]
- Bios: Vidas que cambiaron la tuya, profiling musicians like Gustavo Cerati, Charly García, Andres Calamaro, and Luis Alberto Spinetta[9]—with the episode on Calamaro nominated for an International Emmy,[10] and the series as a whole drawing over 3 million viewers, often hitting number one in Latin American TV ratings.[11]
For Nat Geo Kids, he developed:
- Nat Geo Lab, an educational science show starring Sebastián Villalobos,[12]
- Opa Popa Dupa, a puppet-based educational series.[13]
Disney (2019–present)
Following the acquisition of Fox by Disney in 2019, Semenzato became Head of Development and Production for factual, comedy, and scripted content in Latin America for Disney+, Star+, and National Geographic. Projects include:
- Diciembre 2001, a political thriller series that earned the recommendation of then Argentine vice-president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner,[14][15]
- Kun por Agüero, a documentary about footballer Sergio Agüero that premiered at Canneseries,[16]
- Releyendo Mafalda, a docuseries on the Argentine comic Mafalda,[17]
- Chueco, a Disney+ family sitcom,[18]
- Viaje al Centro de la Tierra, a modern adaptation of Verne's Journey To The Center of the Earth, for streaming on Disney+.[19]
- Argentina '78, which was also praised by former vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner,
- Confidential, a docuseries on Guillermo Pérez Roldán, whose release reignited the legal dispute between Roldan and his father. [20]
Awards
Projects under Semenzato’s leadership have won or been nominated for:
- Promax/BDA and FIAP awards (Cartoon Network),
- One Show Awards
- Martín Fierros (Bios (Oro), Chueco, Confidential, Diciembre 2001, Alessandra a tu manera),[21][22][23][24]
- International Emmy (Bios: Calamaro, Opa Popa Dupa, Ico Bit Zip, Hack The City),[25][26][27][28]
- Canneseries (Kun por Agüero),
- New York Festival Silver, and Bronze (Releyendo Mafalda, Diciembre 2001).[14]
