Comment: As previously noted, the sources are almost entirely from wihtin the Freemason community of England (and, if I read correctly, one particular region of England). Harvey may be a known personality among this limited community, but this does not make him a person of general notability as defined by Wikipedia. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 00:47, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Comment: All sources are primary -- either written by Harvey himself or by organisations of which Harvey is a member. Harvey may be a notable English Freemason, but this does not equate to general notability. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:39, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

Antony David George Harvey (known as Tony, born 13th October 1959) is a leadership consultant, author, corporate speaker, and charity trustee.
He is internationally recognised for his work promoting collaborative links between Scouting and Freemasonry, and for his innovative contributions to membership development in the two global organisations.
He held the world's oldest and most prestigious annual Masonic lectureship, United Grand Lodge of England’s Prestonian Lecture, in 2012 with Scouting & Freemasonry: two parallel organisations? The lecture and the book of the same name have inspired members of both organisations to collaborate in local and national initiatives.[1][2][3][4]
He went on to propose to UGLE the development of the Members’ Pathway and was its main author. The Members’ Pathway has since become the toolkit at the heart of UGLE’s Strategy for Freemasonry 2022 and beyond, contributing to membership growth for the first time since the 1970s.[5][6]
The Members’ Pathway was inspired by The Scout Association’s six-step approach to adult recruitment, which Harvey helped develop and which underpinned UK Scouting’s own membership growth.
Harvey’s latest work, The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Lodges, is being used to rejuvenate Lodge management and culture in multiple Masonic jurisdictions.[7][8][9]
He has spent over 35 years as a leadership consultant and 20 years as a charity trustee. He is currently Chair of Trustees at Lifelites.[10][11]
Early life and education
[edit]Tony Harvey was born in Barnehurst, South East London, England, in 1959. He joined the 4th Erith Scout Group as an eight-year-old Cub Scout, went on to became a Queen's Scout and has been an active member of The Scouts ever since.[12]
His family moved to Gravesend in Kent in 1972, where he attended Springhead School for Boys. He left early to study under a collaborative scheme between the University of Oxford and the Open University, graduating with a degree in Psychology & Education and qualifications as a teacher and youth worker. He later trained in clinical audiology, leadership & management, learning & development, human resources, organisational development, strategy, governance, and related fields.
Early career
[edit]After graduating, Harvey worked with adolescents in local authority care for two years. He then joined the Medical Research Council as a researcher, co-authoring several academic papers on the psychology of hearing and developing specialist software for speech and hearing analysis.
Professional activities
[edit]In 1989 Harvey became Training Manager at British Midland Airways and later Group Manager for HR at Pera International. He founded THR consulting in 1996, providing bespoke training and consultancy services in the public, private and voluntary sectors. [13]
His work earned a National Training Award in 2001 and he subsequently served as a national judge for the award scheme.
In 2001, Harvey co authored Choosing & Using Music in Training , a practical guide for trainers and teachers published by Gower, reflecting his career-long focus on innovative training methods and adult learning theory.[14]
In 2018, he published Introducing the Success Cycle: six steps to achieving your dreams, a framework which brings together different approaches to leadership, management, change and planning into one integrated, consistent and balanced approach to achieving success.[15]
He currently works as a leadership coach, organisational development consultant and corporate speaker.
He is a Fellow of the Society for Education & Training, the Learning & Performance Institute, the Institute of Leadership, the Chartered Management Institute, the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the British Psychological Society and the Society of Authors.
Harvey has applied the expertise gained in his professional career to develop innovative approaches to membership development in both Scouting and Freemasonry, contributing to initiatives which have been adopted internationally.
Scouting
[edit]Harvey has been a volunteer in the Scout Association for over 40 years, in local, county and national roles in areas covering youth programme, adult recruitment & training, fundraising and governance. He has contributed to the development of national programmes for recruiting and training adult volunteers, co-authored and edited Recruiting Adults: a practical guide, and helped develop UK Scouting's approach to leadership and management.
With The Hon Michael Baden-Powell (later 4th Baron Baden-Powell of Gilwell) and two others, Harvey established a charitable company, B-P Jam Roll Ltd., to raise the money to buy Jam Roll. Jam Roll is the Rolls Royce car gifted to the founder of Scouting (Michael Baden-Powell’s grandfather) by the “Scouts of the World” to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Scouting in 1929. The car had been in private ownership for sixty years but is now displayed at the Great British Car Journey. It is used at Scout and Guide events, to educate young people about Scouting’s heritage.[16]
Harvey is The UK Scout Association's HQ Liaison for Freemasonry and the Deputy Chairman of the Kindred Lodges Association.[12][17]
Harvey has received multiple Good Service Awards for services to Scouting, the most recent being the Bar to the Silver Acorn in 2019. He is also a Baden-Powell World Fellow and a Gilwell Fellow.[18][19]
Freemasonry
[edit]Harvey is a Freemason and Grand Officer under the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), Freemasonry's oldest and largest Grand Lodge. He was appointed UGLE's Prestonian Lecturer for 2012 and has presented his lecture, Scouting and Freemasonry: Two Parallel Organisations?, on over 130 occasions throughout England & Wales, and in Scotland, the USA, South Africa, Poland, Norway, Iceland, Gibraltar, India, New Zealand and the Philippines. His book of the same title is considered to be the authoritative text on the subject.[2][20][21][3]
In 2015, Harvey conceived and proposed the Members’ Pathway to UGLE. Between 2015 and 2020, he served as its principal author and editor. The programme, described by the Pro Grand Master as a “game changer”, was designed to help Lodges attract, introduce, engage, retain and retrieve members. It is now a fundamental component of UGLE's seven year strategy.[6][22][5][23]
With the onset of the COVID‑19 pandemic, Harvey became one of Freemasonry's first and most active online speakers. Between March 2020 and June 2021, he delivered more than 140 online talks for hosts on six continents reaching an estimated audience of over 20,000.[24]
His 2022 book, The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Lodges, with a foreword by the Deputy Grand Master of UGLE, Sir David Wootton, complements the Members’ Pathway and outlines an approach to rejuvenating Lodge culture and management. His talk based on the book is in demand by Lodges and other Masonic bodies internationally.[7][25][8]
In 2025, he became the first British Scout and Freemason to receive the “Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award” from the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and Scouting America (formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America). He was presented with the award by the Grand Master of Pennsylvania after delivering his talk, The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Lodges, to the leaders of Freemasonry in that state.[26][27]
For his work, Harvey has been elected an Honorary Member of nine Lodges under UGLE (including two in South Africa) and one under the Grand Lodge of the State of Rio Janeiro.
Charity work
[edit]Harvey has served as trustee or chair of multiple charities including two Scouting Trustee Boards, the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls & Boys and the Masonic Charitable Foundation. He helped found the charities B-P Jam Roll and the REQUEST Foundation, both of which have connections to Scouting and are for the benefit of young people.[28][29]
Since 2023, Harvey has served as Chair of Trustees at Lifelites, a charity providing assistive technology, training and support to every children's hospice in Britain and Ireland. [30][31] As Chair, he has overseen the modernisation of the charity’s governance and the development of a growth strategy to increase its reach.[32][33][34]
He has raised over £135,000 for charity from the sale of his books and the delivery of his talks.
Personal life
[edit]Harvey is married to Diane and lives in the East Midlands. They have an adult daughter who lives and works in London.[12]
