Diego De Giorgi, (born March 1970) is an Italian banker and businessman. He is currently the group chief financial officer (CFO) of Standard Chartered.[1]
Early life
[edit]Diego De Giorgi was born in March 1970 in Trieste, Italy. He earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Bocconi University before completing a CEMS master’s degree at the London School of Economics. He holds Italian citizenship.
Career
[edit]Goldman Sachs
[edit]In April 1994, De Giorgi joined Goldman Sachs. During his 18 years, including eight as partner, he held leadership roles in the Equity Capital Markets Group and the Financial Institutions Group before becoming the chief operating officer for the Global Investment Banking division.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch
[edit]In January 2013, De Giorgi moved to Bank of America Merrill Lynch where he spent six years. He joined as co-head of European securities operations[2] and subsequently held various roles including co-head of EMEA corporate and investment banking[3] and Global Head of Investment Banking.[4] His exit from the firm followed the departure of his boss, Christian Meissner,[5][6] who led the Bank's corporate and investment banking division.[7]
Unicredit
[edit]In February 2020, De Giorgi was appointed a non-executive director of Unicredit[8] and served as a member of the Board's Compensation Committee.
Pegasus Europe
[edit]In April 2021, De Giorgi became Co-Chief Executive of Pegasus Europe,[9] Europe’s largest special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), which was focused on the financial services sector and was listed on Euronext Amsterdam. The organisation was backed by Financière Agache, which acts as the family office of Bernard Arnault,[10] and Tikehau Capital. The venture was created alongside former UniCredit boss, Jean Pierre Mustier.[11] Despite raising a record of €500 million when it listed in 2021,[12] in the face of rising interest rates and falling valuations for assets, the SPAC announced that it would cease operations, returning capital to its investors in May 2023.[13]
Standard Chartered
[edit]In September 2023, De Giorgi joined Standard Chartered.[14] Since January 2024 he has held the role of executive director and group chief financial officer. His appointment was highlighted as having the potential to turn around the performance of Standard Chartered and as strengthening the Group's succession plans.[15] His focus on boosting returns resulted in a focus on clients that leveraged the Bank's broad network, with a focus on international clients.[16] In February 2025, De Giorgi, alongside long-standing group chief executive, Bill Winters, announced a record in full-year income for the firm at $19.7 billion dollars.[17] Following this performance, Winters and De Giorgi attracted media attention over high levels of banker pay[18] following the UK Government's decision to remove of a pay cap on banker's bonsues.[19] The remuneration report subsequently received shareholder support. In April 2025 he led the issuing of a €1 billion social bond[20] focusing on social impact activity across the Group's markets. In May 2025, De Giorgi highlighted the Group's focus was in serving the global Indian and global Chinese client segments as it seeks to build its wealth management franchise.[21]
Other activities
[edit]De Giorgi is also a director of the MIB Trieste School of Management.[22]
Personal life
[edit]De Giorgi lives in London. He is married to Veronique Morghen[23] and they have two children.
