History
Formation, early recordings, and The Flood that came after the Storm (2005-2007)
Gillian Carter formed in late 2005 when Logan Rivera convinced Cameron Hade Smith to form a Screamo band with him. They quickly recording a 4 song Demo in early 2006. Soon they were joined by then classmate & friend Keith Poulos on bass. Smith & Poulos soon left the project after playing a handful of local shows in mid 2006. Rivera would soon be joined by multi-instrumentalist Jesse Hardy on bass and Steve Pristas on drums. Together they would write and record the group's debut album "The Flood that came after the Storm" self releasing on the groups own label Explosion! Records on May 7, 2007. Summer 2007 would see the band embarking on its first ever 30 day US tour with Pristas' then other band Cassettes on Fire, which also featured Robert Caruso II on bass.
Brief Hiatus, Having Lost..., and lineup change (2008-2012)
Shortly after the bands summer 2007 tour the band would go on a small hiatus, stating personal differences. In early 2008 Rivera and Hardy would get together to start writing and recording what would be the bands sophomore release finishing the recording process in late August of 2011. The band released "Having Lost..." on November 6, 2011 via Explosion! Records along with the departure of Hardy, Pristas, and then bassist Louie Guevarez in December of that year. Early 2012 would see the arrival of drummer Matthew Horner, bassist Jesse DeSiena and guitarist James Zollo who would exit later that year. Together they would embark on a US tour with Henrietta from Orlando, FL that summer. Late 2012 would see the band self releasing the "Always Remembering Decisions" EP, as well as split release with former band Ghost Aviary.
Lost Ships Sinking with the Sunset, Songs for Splits, and lineup change (2013-2015)
The bands third studio album "Lost Ships Sinking with the Sunset".[1] released on June 3, 2013 through Dog Knights Productions (U.K.) and Middle-Man Records (U.S.) would see the departure of drummer Matthew Horner who would go on to join the band Frameworks. That summer the band would embark on another US tour with Henrietta from Orlando, FL as well as a winter tour with Echo Base from Tallahassee, FL in December of that same year. 2014 saw the release of "Songs for Splits" on The Ghost is Clear Records and Suspended Soul and Tapes which was a compilation of unreleased songs that were slated to go on various splits, one of which being Gouge Away. Summer of 2014 saw the departure of bassist Jesse DeSiena and drummer Damien Thompson with drummer Anthony (Tony) Hugo Oriza and bassist Robert Caruso II joining. In 2015 Caruso II would depart for 11 months leaving Rivera and Oriza to tour and finish working on the bands 4th release. From May 13th - 18th, 2015 the band would record with Kris Hilbert at Legitimate Business in Greensboro, NC releasing the single "Another Blank Page" for a subsequent 4-way split released later that year.
Dreams of Suffocation, Oriza's departure, ...This Earth Shaped Tomb, EU tour, Audiotree (2016-2019)
The bands fourth album "Dreams of Suffocation" was released on April 8, 2016 through Skeletal Lightning (U.S.) and Dog Knights Productions (U.K.) followed by a 30 day US and Canada tour[2]. In December of 2017 Oriza would depart due to personal reasons. The bands fifth album "...This Earth Shaped Tomb" would be released on August 31, 2018 through Skeletal Lightning (U.S.) and Moment of Collapse (EU) The album was recorded by the band from September 13th, 2017 - April 26th, 2018 and featured Oriza on drums. Following the release of the album saw the band embark on their first EU tour with Lost Boys from Germany. 2019 saw the band embard on another 30 day US and Canada tour performing at that years New Friends Fest in Toronto, The Fest in Gainesville, FL, as well as an Audiotree[3][4] session in Chicago, IL. During 2018[5] - 2021 Kyle Shepherd & Jesse Lieurance fill in on drumming duties for shows and tours. During this time the band had received ups by kerrang[6], and Decibel[7]
Covid, Salvation Through Misery, Oriza rejoining, Songs of Summer, and Overseas touring (2020-Present)
In 2020 the band did a small tour with For your health in January with a full US tour planned but subsequently had to reschedule when the world shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time Rivera and Caruso worked on what would become the bands sixth studio effort. In 2021[8] Lieurance departed from touring duties after the bands performance at that years The Fest in Gainesville, FL. September 2021 saw the return of Oriza on drums. On June 6, 2022 the group self-released "Songs of Summer" following that up with a 2 week long tour to ZBR Fest. Later that year on October 7, 2022, the bands 6th full-length album "Salvation Through Misery"[9][10] was released on Skeletal Lightning (U.S.). May of 2023[11] saw the band performing 3 shows in Japan[12] as well as heading back to Europe performing at the last Fluff Fest[13] in Rokycany. 2024[14] saw the bands UK debut at that years Damnation Festival[15]as well as Roadburn Festival[16] in 2025[17]. As of current the band has no plans to tour the US.
Musical Style
Gillian Carter's musical style has been described as an emotionally intensive style of screamo that blends an array of other sounds, including post-rock, melodic hardcore, emo, post-hardcore, black metal, throwing in elements of folk into the mix by incorporating acoustic guitars and harmonicas at times.
