Manvir "Mick" S. Grewal Sr. (born in Michigan) is an American attorney specializing in high-stakes personal injury and mass tort litigation, with a notable focus on representing survivors of institutional sexual abuse. He is the founder and managing partner of Grewal Law PLLC.[1]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Mick Grewal graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned his Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and pursued a Master of Laws in Taxation at what is now known as the University of Chicago Law School. He was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 1993, and subsequently in Illinois and Washington D.C. in 1994, as well as several federal courts.

Career

[edit]

Grewal began his legal career in 1993 with a solo practice, focusing on court-appointed cases, family law, and criminal defense. In 2016, he acquired Church Wyble PC, expanding his practice to include plaintiff representation in mass torts, personal injuries, medical malpractice, and sexual assault cases. This period marked a significant shift in his career focus towards advocating for survivors of sexual abuse.

Grewal Law PLLC operates out of offices in Okemos and Northville, Michigan. The firm is recognized for its work in significant civil litigation, particularly against large institutions.

High-Stakes Litigation

[edit]

Grewal has gained national prominence for his involvement in high-profile cases, representing numerous survivors of sexual abuse and mass shootings against powerful institutions. His work in these cases has resulted in significant settlements and has been instrumental in advocating for institutional accountability and systemic change.

Larry Nassar Sexual Abuse Cases

[edit]

Grewal played a pivotal role in the litigation against Larry Nassar, the former Michigan State University (MSU) and USA Gymnastics doctor who perpetrated widespread sexual abuse.[2]

Grewal represented 111 of the 333 survivors in lawsuits against Michigan State University, which resulted in a historic $500 million settlement.[3][4] This was the largest personal injury settlement in history against a university for sexual abuse.

Grewal also represented 112 survivors in a lawsuit against USA Gymnastics and the USOPC, contributing to a $380 million settlement, and was part of the legal team that secured a $144 million settlement against the FBI for its failure to timely and adequately investigate credible claims of abuse against Larry Nassar. He represented 44 survivors in this action.[5][6][7]

Appearance in At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal

[edit]

In the 2019 HBO documentary, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, directed by Erin Lee Carr, Mick Grewal appears as one of the plaintiff attorneys who represented survivors of Larry Nassar's abuse. The film delves into the systemic failures that allowed Nassar to continue his sexual misconduct and features interviews with survivors, coaches, journalists, and legal advocates.

Grewal provides legal insight into the nature of the victim representation and the broader cultural and institutional breakdowns within USA Gymnastics and affiliated organizations.

Robert Anderson Sexual Abuse Case

[edit]

Grewal was co-lead counsel in a lawsuit against the University of Michigan concerning the sexual abuse perpetrated by former university physician Robert Anderson, which resulted in a $490 million settlement for over 250 survivors.[8]

2023 Michigan State University Shooting

[edit]

Grewal represented two of the students who survived the 2023 mass shooting at Michigan State University: Nathan Statly and Troy Forbush. As lead counsel,[9][10] Grewal negotiated a portion of the $29.75 million settlement reached with MSU in 2025, securing $14.25 million for Statly—who suffered a traumatic gunshot wound to the head—and $2.5 million for Forbush, who was shot in the chest.

Work as a Producer

[edit]

In addition to his legal practice, Mick S. Grewal Sr. works in film and television production, holding producer credits across multiple genres, including crime dramas, holiday romances, and independent comedies.

  • Cypher (TV Series, 2021): Credited as Co-Executive Producer for Season 2, Episodes 1 ("Heads or Tails") and 2 ("Hide and Seek"). The series follows a crypto-analyst caught in a web of conspiracy while decoding a hit list.
  • Gimme My Money (Feature Film, 2022): Served as Executive Producer[11] on this action-comedy about a tough, mysterious woman collecting a debt from a mob boss.
  • The Christmas Thief (TV Movie, 2021): Credited as Co-Executive Producer. The film follows a new private investigator solving a burglary and reconnecting with her former high school sweetheart.
  • A Christmas Witness (TV Movie, 2021): Credited as Co-Executive Producer. The story centers around a U.S. Marshal tasked with protecting a witness during the holidays, who unexpectedly finds romance along the way.

[edit]

Mick Grewal resides in Williamston, Michigan, with his wife and children.
