Murat Kurşun (born 1974) is a Turkish singer known for performing Turkish folk music and Arabesque pop. His career spans over two decades.

Early Life and Career

[edit]

Kurşun was born in Mardin, Turkey, to a family of Arabic origin. He began performing music at age seven, learning instruments including the darbuka, drums, organ, and saz. His early musical influences included regional traditions and artists such as Berdan Mardini and Emrah.[1] He rose to prominence in the 2000s, blending folk melodies with contemporary pop arrangements.[2] His first album, Gördüm Seninle Onu, was released in 1998. Notable songs in his repertoire include "Mardinli Güzel Yarim," "Bu Dere Baş Aşağı," "Mardine Gidelim," "Adana Köprü Başı," and "Bir Arak Ver." He also performs songs in Arabic at events with Arabic-speaking audiences.[3][4][better source needed]

Musical Style and Influence

[edit]

Kurşun's work is categorized within Türk Sanat Müziği (Turkish classical music) and Arabesque pop genres, characterized by traditional instrumentation fused with modern production. His 2007 single "İyi Ki Varsın" ("Glad You Exist") gained significant popularity in Turkey and has been described[by whom?] as a well-known example of contemporary Arabesque music.[5]

Personal Life and Health Struggles

[edit]

In 2019, Kurşun publicly announced a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, stating the condition affected his mobility. In 2024, he reported that subsequent medical evaluations determined he had been misdiagnosed, having undergone thymus gland removal and cortisone therapies based on the incorrect diagnosis. Kurşun described the experience as leaving him "in tatters" and has since advocated for patients to seek second medical opinions for serious diagnoses.[6]

Kurşun married Asena Toprak in 2016, whom he met during a music video production. They have one son, Murat Can.[7] He was previously married to singer Ceylan Avcı from 2006 to 2007. News reports from 2007 cited by Hürriyet documented Ceylan publicly accusing Kurşun of domestic violence following an incident at a Silivri nightclub.[8]

Kurşun owns a 50-acre farm in Balıkesir and maintains residences in Mardin.[9][10]
