A Forest of Stars is a black metal band from Leeds, UK. They are currently signed to Lupus Lounge.
History
A Forest of Stars was formed in 2007 as a four piece by Cumiskey, Blakelock, Eyre and Stone.[1] In 2008 they released their first album, The Corpse of Rebirth. This was originally intended to be their only release, but received a better reception than anticipated, leading the band to treat the project more seriously and take Hodgson as a fifth member.[1][2]
With this lineup the band released their next album Opportunistic Thieves of Spring to some critical acclaim within the specialist extreme metal blogosphere.[3] Following this, they played at Damnation Festival in 2011, the same year Jessop joined the band.
On July 20th 2012 the band released A Shadowplay for Yesterdays, again to acclaim within the subculture. This album was deemed to be relatively more accessible with songs of shorter length than in their previous works, and also a move relatively away from black metal and into a greater incorporation of elements of Progressive Rock in particular, as well as folk and classical music.[4][5]
The band appeared at Roadburn Festival in 2013[6] and further increased its touring activity in 2014,[7] including a further appearance at Damnation. Midgely would join the band in this year, bringing it to its present lineup.
2015 saw the release of a fourth album, Beware the Sword you Cannot see. This reached the attention of the mainstream rock music press via a positive review for Metal Hammer magazine by Jonathan Selzer, who described the album as "an impending moment of reckoning whose sweep will surely echo across the metal firmament"[8]
The band's 2018 album Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes was again positively reviewed by Selzer,[9] and likewise by Danny Sanderson for Distorted Sounds, who saw the album as "allowing some of the more subtle elements in A FOREST OF STARS' sound to take a more central role".[10]
The band also appeared at Damnation for a third time in 2018, and at Bloodstock Open Air for a first.[2]
Aesthetic and musical style
The band has adopted a steampunk aesthetic, including in their of pseudonyms as well as their aesthetic choices. Cumiskey has suggested that any Victorian influences in the music itself is at least partially "projection that occurs on the listener's part".[1]
While black metal remains a uniting theme, the band's music has been described as "eclectic"[10] and "a powerful concoction of black metal and psychedelic influences" with elements of "folk music and electronica".[9]
Cumiskey has cited Fleurety, Swans, Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor as influences.
