Margareta Barchan

[edit]

Margareta Barchan (30 January 1950 – 19 January 2024) was a Swedish business executive, entrepreneur and author.[1] She co‑founded the Malmö‑based learning company Celemi in 1985 and was named Sweden’s Businesswoman of the Year in 1997.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Barchan was born in Sweden on 30 January 1950; publicly available sources have not reported details of her family background.[1] Later in her career she completed an MSc in Consulting and Coaching for Change from HEC Paris in partnership with the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.[3] She also studied corporate social responsibility at the University of Geneva and attended executive‑education courses at Harvard Business School.[4]

Career

[edit]

Celemi

[edit]

Together with Klas Mellander and Krister Nathanaelson, Barchan founded Celemi in 1985.[5] The firm designs business‑simulation games used by multinational corporations for staff development. Under Barchan’s leadership as chief executive, Celemi expanded to the United Kingdom and the United States and appeared on the Europe’s 500 list of high‑growth companies in the late 1990s.[6]

In addition to running the company, Barchan wrote about measuring \"intangible assets\" inside organisations. Her 1999 article in Strategy & Leadership described Celemi’s internal \"Intangible Assets Monitor\".[7]

Board and advisory roles

[edit]

Barchan stepped down from day‑to‑day management at Celemi in the early 2000s and later chaired the strategy consultancy Normann Partners.[8] She served on the boards of the toy maker BRIO (elected 2003)[9] and the recruitment firm Poolia (2010–2013).[10]

Academic and non‑profit work

[edit]

Barchan was an afiliate professor of sustainability at the Lorange Institute of Business in Zurich (later the CEIBS Zurich campus) and lectured on leadership at Business School Lausanne.[11] She co‑founded Pioneers of Change, an international network for young professionals interested in sustainable business, and later launched the Brave Leaders Project, a series of interviews with executives about moral courage.[12]
