Hazara campaign was a military expedition conducted by Mahmud Hotak (c. 1717–1718) to subdue the Hazara tribes of Hazarajat. It was one of Mahmud’s first major campaigns after he assassinated his uncle Abdul Aziz and seized control of Kandahar.

Background

[edit]

Following the death of Mirwais Hotak in 1715, his brother Abdul Aziz assumed leadership of the Hotak emirate in Kandahar and attempted to restore ties with the Safavid Shah Sultan Ḥusayn. When Mahmud Hotak assassinated Abdul Aziz in late 1717, the Hazaras asked Shah Sultan Ḥusayn for aid on multiple occasions but received none, leaving them vulnerable to Mahmud’s retaliation.

Campaign

[edit]

After killing his uncle, Mahmud gathered an army and marched against the Hazaras. The Hazara tribesmen lacked reinforcements—Safavid support never materialized—and eventually surrendered to Mahmud.

  • Opponents: Hazara tribal chiefs (Hazarajat)
  • Outcome: Hazara surrender[1]
