Antonio Alegre Cremades (2 June 1939 – 15 October 2006) was a Spanish painter, engineer and professor. His work spanned from the early 1960s to the early 2000s, exploring themes of science fiction, human-machine interaction, and baroque-inspired complexity. He is known for combining technical precision with visionary, symbolic compositions.

Early life and education

[edit]

Alegre Cremades was born in Spain in 1939. He pursued both technical and artistic studies, graduating as an industrial engineer while simultaneously training in fine arts.

Career

[edit]

His early work was closely aligned with the avant-garde movements of the 1960s in Spain. In the 1970s, he developed a strong thematic body around the concept of "Man and the Machine", a visionary interpretation of human dependence on technology. Later, in the 1990s, his work evolved into the Babel series, a set of complex and allegorical compositions on communication, virtuality, and global disorder.

His artistic career includes painting, printmaking, sculpture, and teaching. He held exhibitions in Spain and abroad, and his works are included in public and private collections.

Style and themes

[edit]

Alegre Cremades' style is marked by baroque complexity, futuristic structures, and a narrative visual language that spans past, present, and future. His iconography often includes architectural forms, crowds, machines, and symbolic figures.

Legacy

[edit]

His works are held in institutions such as the Museu d'Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni (MACVAC) and have been featured in exhibitions like the 2013 retrospective at MUVIM, showcasing his 1970s prints.[1]

He is also included in the collections of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.[2]

In 2016, the Ateneo Mercantil de Valencia hosted a public presentation of a monographic book about his work, as part of its "Relevant Figures in Culture and Art" series.[3]

A full-length monographic book has been published by the cultural institution Institució Alfons el Magnànim.[4]
