The Battle of Prochnyi Okop (1836) or Prochnyi Okop expedition took place between the Circassians led by Ale Khirtsizhiqo in revenge for the massacres of Circassian civillians by Grigory Zass. Residing in the base was the daughter of Grigory Zass.

Background

[edit]

In 1833 Grigory Zass was appointed Commander-In-Chief of the war in Circassia. After this, Zass and his men began to indiscriminately massacre Circassian villagers.[1][2][3][4] Zass's main headquarters was in the fortress.

Battle and aftermath

[edit]

The battle began with a raid by the forces of Khirtsizhiqo Ale,[5] together with his army from the Circassian resistance, who attacked Prochnyi Okop.[4] When the Circassians attacked this base, they kidnapped General Zass's daughter. Most of the garrison defending the fortress were massacred. Three years later, they sent a letter to Zass informing him that they would return his daughter, and they agreed on the terms and location of the exchange.[5][2]
