Mahendra Nath Temple[3], the ancient mahendranath temple of Lord Shiva, located in the famous Mehandar village of Siswan block, about 35 km from Siwan district of Bihar state[4], was built by Nepal King Mahendravir Vikram Sahdev in the seventeenth century and was named Mahendranath. It is believed that by offering water to the Shivalinga of Mehandar, childless people get children and skin patients get relief from skin diseases.
Main attractions of the temple
[edit]Hundreds of bells of small and big sizes are hung from the top to the bottom of the temple. The glory of Lord Shiva resonates from the temple premises to the streets with the chanting of Har-Har Mahadev and the sound of bells and conches. Akhand bhajans and sankirtans are recited for 10 days during the festival of Dussehra. Apart from this, lakhs of devotees perform Jalabhishek during the month of Sawan[5] and Mahashivratri. Tourists keep coming throughout the year. An idol of Lord Ganesha is also placed in the complex. There is also a small temple of Maa Parvati to the north. There is a separate temple of Hanuman ji, while to the south of the sanctum sanctorum is the temple of Lord Ram and Sita. The idols of Kaal Bhairav, Batuk Bhairav and Mahadev are to the south of the temple complex. There is a temple of Lord Vishwakarma at a distance of 300 meters from the temple complex. To the north of the temple is a pond known as Kamaldah Sarovar which is spread over an area of 551 bighas. Devotees take water from this lake to perform Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva and also do Parikrama of the lake. Lotus blooms in this lake in November and many migratory birds come here and stay till March. Lakhs of devotees come here to Mahashivratri. The festival continues for the whole day and a special marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is organized. During this time, the main attraction is the Shiva Baraat.[6]
