Submission declined on 28 June 2025 by KylieTastic (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia. Your draft shows signs of having been generated by a large language model, such as ChatGPT. Jane Willan is an American pastor and author known for her leadership in the United Church of Christ and her cozy mystery novels featuring Sister Agatha.
Early life and education
[edit]Willan studied at Hiram College in Ohio, then earned a Master of Science from Boston University and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School.[1] Before entering ministry, she worked in science and education – editing manuscripts as a science editor and freelance writer in Boston, teaching school, and conducting biological research at Harvard University.[1] Those years shaped how she approaches both ministry and fiction.[1]
Ministry career
[edit]She was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 2003.[1] Her first call took her to Creston, Iowa, where she helped a small, struggling congregation find new life.[1] Later, in Burlington, Iowa, she became their first woman installed pastor.[1] Under her leadership, both churches regained confidence and purpose.[1]
Willan also served as Moderator of the Iowa Conference UCC’s Board of Directors and on the national Justice and Witness Ministries board.[1] After the Iowa Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage in 2009, she was among the first clergy in the state to officiate these weddings.[1]
In the mid-2010s, she moved to New England.[2] She pastored the Congregational Church of Grafton, Massachusetts, then First Congregational Church of Paxton, Massachusetts.[2] In 2022, she became the 21st senior pastor – and the first woman to hold that role – at First Church of West Hartford, Connecticut.[3][4] As of 2025, she serves as minister of the Plantsville Congregational Church in Connecticut.[5] At nearly every church she has served, she has been their first woman pastor.[2]
Writing career
[edit]Alongside ministry, Willan writes books that draw on her life of faith.[6] Her first, Jump Start This Church! How to Go from Declining Church to Dynamic Church (NorLights Press, 2014), co-authored with Peter Dennis, offers practical advice on church growth, leadership, and reaching into the wider community.[1]
She later wrote the Sister Agatha and Father Selwyn mysteries.[6] Her debut novel, The Shadow of Death (2018), introduces Sister Agatha, an Anglican nun at Gwenafwy Abbey in Wales, who investigates a suspicious death amid the abbey’s cheese-making work.[6] The Hour of Death followed in October 2018,[7] and Abide With Me was published in 2020.[8] Reviewers praised the series for its humour, warmth, and satisfying puzzles.[7][8] Willan describes her novels as “comfortable detective stories” that bring readers “lots of cozy feelings.”[6]
Her standalone novel, Widow’s Walk, is scheduled for publication by Sibylline Press in 2025.[5] It follows Rev. Miranda McCurdy, a former chef turned priest, as she navigates grief and ministry in coastal Maine.[5]
Personal life
[edit]Willan often draws on her ministry experiences to create authentic church settings in her fiction.[9] Readers appreciate her warm, hopeful voice.[9] She lives in Connecticut with her husband, Don, and their dog, Ollie, and enjoys hiking New England’s trails.[9][2]
