Piero Di Pasquale in 2020

Pietro Vincenzo di Pasquale (born 30 October 1950 in Marino, Lazio), known professionally as Piero di Pasquale, is an Italian journalist, television author, writer and entrepreneur. He began his media career in the late 1970s, during the post-liberalization era of Italian broadcasting, contributing to early private media initiatives before joining Rai in 1982.

He co-authored the historical television series La Notte della Repubblica with Sergio Zavoli.[1]In 1982, di Pasquale became a professional journalist at Rai, Italy's national public broadcasting company.

As Director and Host of NEXT on Rai News 24, he conducted over 1,300 long-form interviews with global figures across politics, science, and culture.[2]

During his career, he wrote several essays and stories, including La Società del Computer (1983, Eri/Mondadori)[3] and Hezbollah: Partito di Dio o Partito del Diavolo (2012, Koinè Editore).[4] Among his international recognitions is the Best Documentary Film award from the Film Advisory Board of Hollywood.[5]

After leaving Rai, he co-founded MANIMA,[6] an innovative social-purpose startup with Carolina Guthmann, aimed at preserving the ancient Italian art of hand embroidery.[7]

Biography

Pasquale was born in Marino, Lazio, Italy. He studied physics at La Sapienza University in Rome. In 1976, he co-created Hello Jazz, a radio program dedicated to African American music history, which aired on Punto Radio and was later adapted for television by Quinta Rete. He joined RAI and was formally hired in 1982. That same year, he produced a five-part investigative series on computing and artificial intelligence, including interviews with Nobel laureate Herbert A. Simon and Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf. The series led to the book La Società del Computer.[8] He also collaborated with Tiziana Ferrario on Italia Sera. In 1988, he was invited by Sergio Zavoli to collaborate on the RAI documentary series Viaggio intorno all'uomo, and later became co-author of the historical investigation series La Notte della Repubblica, which examined Italy's political violence during the so-called "Years of Lead". He returned to TG1 in the early 1990s, where he contributed to the weekly program TV7. He also worked as a correspondent for Rai International, serving as West Coast Bureau Chief in Los Angeles until 2000.[9]In 2003, he published the book Hezbollah: Partito di Dio o Partito del Diavolo, based on interviews conducted in Lebanon, including with the group's leader.[10] That same year, he directed and hosted the Rai News 24 program NEXT, which featured over 1,350 interviews with international leaders and thinkers.[11] He directed and hosted informational programs such as Italia News, Focus Next, and Italia World.,[12] coordinating Rai's international TV news activities. At the end of his tenure in 2010, he left Rai to pursue new challenges, focusing on promoting new ideas in contemporary society, such as social entrepreneurship, regenerative business practices, sustainability, and authenticity. With his wife, German economist Carolina Guthmann, he co-founded a multi-award-winning innovative social-purpose startup, MANIMA,[13] to preserve an ancient art at risk of extinction an ancient Italian cultural heritage at risk of being forgotten due to the decline of the domestic market: hand embroidery. As of today their first MANIMA store is located at Villa Igiea in Palermo, Sicily.[14]

Private Life

He was first married to Josefina Scarpitti, with whom he had two children: Pierluca di Pasquale, is an Italian-born film director and screenwriter based in the United States.[15]His other son, Andrea José di Pasquale, is a film producer based in Rome and runs the production company Qoomoon. In 2016, he remarried German economist Carolina Guthmann.[16] Together, they decided to completely transform their lives and give a new meaning to their existence. Both left their careers, and for a year, they dedicated themselves full-time to studying what to do next. Eventually, they decided to support an ancient art, hand embroidery, which is at risk of disappearing due to the lack of a local market. He continues to write and is currently working on his first novel.
