Johanna Wenckebach (born 1982) is a German lawyer, labor law scholar, and labor union official. Since 2024, she has served as Chief Legal Officer (Justiziarin) on the executive board of IG Metall, recognized as Europe’s largest labor union organization.[1][2] From 2019 to 2023, she was Scientific Director of the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute (HSI) for Labor and Social Law, which is part of the Hans Böckler Foundation.[3] Since 2023, she has also been a professor of labor law at the University of Labour in Frankfurt am Main.[4]

Education and career

[edit]

Wenckebach studied law at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Salamanca, and earned her doctorate in 2012 with a dissertation on anti-discrimination law at the University of Bremen. She completed her legal traineeship in Berlin and Brandenburg and passed the second state examination in 2016.[5]

She held academic positions at various institutions, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the European University Viadrina, and the Berlin School of Economics and Law. In 2016, she joined IG Metall’s Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony district office as a collective bargaining lawyer. During this time, she also served on the supervisory board of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, ultimately as its deputy chair.[5]

In July 2019, Wenckebach became Director of the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute at the Hans Böckler Foundation, where she led research projects on labor law and industrial relations. In 2020, she was named to Capital magazine’s "Top 40 under 40" list in the category of science and society.[6]

In 2024, she joined the executive board of IG Metall as its Chief Legal Officer, heading the union’s legal and data protection departments.[1]

Supervisory and advisory roles

[edit]

Wenckebach was a member and deputy chair of the supervisory board of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH from 2019 to 2020, a subsidiary of Volkswagen. In 2024, she was elected to the supervisory board of the BMW Group.[7]
