Thae Su Nyein (Burmese: သဲစုငြိမ်း; pronounced [θɛ́ sṵ ɲéɪɰ̃] ; born 24 May 2007) is a Burmese beauty queen, actress, and commercial model. She was crowned Miss Grand Myanmar 2024.[1][2] She represented Myanmar at the Miss Grand International 2024 competition, where she placed as the 2nd runner-up.[3][4]

    Early life and education

Thae Su Nyein was born on 24 May 2007 in Taungoo, Bago Region, Myanmar. She is the eldest of two siblings.

    Career

In 2022, Thae Su Nyein began professional training in modeling and runway techniques under leading mentors in Myanmar. She launched her entertainment career as a runway model with John Lwin’s John International Modeling Agency, participating in various advertising campaigns and fashion shows.[5]

Thae Su Nyein began her pageantry career at the age of 16, making her one of the youngest contestants in Myanmar's national beauty pageants. Representing Myanmar, she achieved significant success and received wide public attention.[6][7] Following her pageant appearances, she made her debut in the entertainment industry.[8][9] She is currently active in films and commercials in Myanmar.[10][11][12]

In March 2025, Thae Su Nyein participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the opening of Yangon International University Campus (YIUC), alongside other Burmese artists and public figures. The event received coverage in local media and marked her growing involvement in public and cultural engagements.[13]

    Pageantry

    Miss Grand Taungoo 2024

In November 2023, Thae Su Nyein participated in the regional pageant Miss Grand Taungoo 2024, where she was crowned the winner. Her victory in the regional competition qualified her to represent Taungoo at the national pageant, Miss Grand Myanmar 2024.

    Miss Grand Myanmar 2024

In December 2023, Thae Su Nyein participated[14] in the Miss Grand Myanmar 2024 competition. Representing Taungoo, she was crowned Miss Grand Myanmar 2024, earning the opportunity to represent Myanmar in the international competition.[15]

    Miss Grand International 2024

Thae Su Nyein represented Myanmar at the Miss Grand International 2024 pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand. She finished as the 2nd runner-up, making her one of the highest-placing contestants from Myanmar in the history of the pageant.[16]

She competed wearing a modified version of the "Queen Panhtwar" costume, inspired by the legendary warrior queen of Beikthano.[17] Although she did not showcase the full costume on stage, she received widespread support from the Myanmar public.

At the event, which took place in October 2024, she also won multiple special awards, including the Miss Beauty Skin Award, Miss I’Aura Queen Award, and Miss Fan Vote Award.[18] On 25 October 2024, during the grand final, she was named one of the Top 10 semifinalists.[19][20][21] The title was ultimately awarded to Rachel Gupta of India, while Thae Su Nyein finished as the second runner-up.[22]

    Final speech

During the final round, each contestant was given 45 seconds to answer the question:

What do you think is the most critical issue in the world today that needs to be resolved and what solution do you propose?

    Thae Su Nyein answered:

"Good evening. The most critical issue that we are facing on this earth today is overuse of plastic, which can damage to our climate change. Because our world started to happen a short time, day by day, and we should take care of ourselves. We overuse plastic all around the world. If we reduce, renew, recycle, and use more paper, then we can live longer on this earth. Love your Mother Earth."

Despite some grammatical errors, her response was praised for its sincerity and emphasis on environmental sustainability.[23]

    Dethronement and controversy

Thae Su Nyein represented Myanmar at the Miss Grand International 2024 competition, where she was named second runner-up.[24] Shortly after the coronation night, she went live on Instagram to announce that she would return her crown, expressing disappointment for not winning the Best National Costume and Country's Power of the Year awards. She stated that her frustration was not directed toward the winner, Rachel Gupta of India, or the first runner-up,[25] CJ Opiaza of the Philippines, but rather the judging decisions for the special awards.[26]

In response to her actions, the Miss Grand International (MGI) organization, led by President Nawat Itsaragrisil, announced via its social media platforms that Thae Su Nyein's title was officially revoked, citing "inappropriate behavior and actions that violated several regulations."[27]

MGI also accused her former national director, Htoo Ant Lwin, of coercing her into giving up the title and suggested potential legal action.[28] In return, Htoo Ant Lwin alleged that Nawat had accepted a $25,000 bribe from an Indonesian pageant official in exchange for a crown placement. As of now, no independent verification or legal documentation has been released to support either claim.[29]

Following the title revocation, Thae Su Nyein removed the Miss Grand Myanmar 2024 title from her Instagram bio, signaling a deepening rift with the Miss Grand International (MGI) organization. She also unfollowed the Instagram accounts of MGI president Nawat Itsaragrisil and the official MGI page, indicating ongoing tensions between her and the organization.[30]

The incident has attracted widespread attention in the pageantry community, with some pageant observers speculating that it could affect Thae Su Nyein’s eligibility for future international competitions.

    Controversy

In March 2025, Thae Su Nyein received public criticism after performing a “farewell walk” at the Miss World Myanmar 2025 pageant, despite not holding that title. The gesture sparked debate on social media and in local media outlets regarding pageant protocol and representation.[31]

    Philanthropy

In September 2024, the Miss Grand Myanmar organization, together with national corporate social responsibility partners, donated essential supplies worth over K100 million. These supplies included rice, cooking oil, soap, mosquito nets, medicines, and blankets, and were distributed to flood-affected areas such as Taungoo and Tatkon.[32][33]

Following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar on 28 March 2025, Thae Su Nyein actively participated in relief efforts. She appealed for international assistance and personally helped distribute relief supplies to affected communities.[34]
