Helena Guergis (born February 19, 1969 in Barrie, Ontario) is a Canadian politician. She is a current member of the Canadian House of Commons, representing the central-Ontario riding of Simcoe—Grey for the Conservative Party of Canada.
Guergis has lived in her hometown of Angus, Ontario for all but three years of her life. Her family has a history of political involvement in the area. Guergis was educated at Georgian College, and was a small business owner in Angus before beginning her political career. She has also volunteered in fundraising for the Angus Food Bank, the Barrie Literacy Council, and was a Crisis Intervention volunteer for the Barrie and District Rape Crisis Centre for seven years.
Guergis was active with the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party before running for political office. She worked for local Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Joe Tascona for many years, and was an advisor to Janet Ecker during Ecker's service as Minister of Finance and Minister of Education in the provincial governments of Mike Harris and Ernie Eves. She was also elected to serve three terms on the Ontario Progressive Conservative Assocaiton executive.
Guergis was a candidate of the Progressive Conservative Party in the downtown Toronto riding of Trinity—Spadina in the provincial election of 2003. Guergis finished a distant third against New Democratic four-term incumbent Rosario Marchese and Liberal Nellie Pedro in a riding that has not historically voted PC.
In the 2004 federal election, she defeated incumbent Liberal Paul Bonwick by 100 votes in Simcoe—Grey. She is currently the critic for International Co-operation. On January 24, 2005, Guergis was appointed deputy critic for seniors' issues.
In 2003, while running for provincial office in Trinity—Spadina, Guergis claimed that she would vote in favour of same-sex marriage if given the opportunity. Commenting on the issue at an all-candidates debate, she said, "I believe in the right to choose, so I would be voting in favour of it." [1] When campaigning in Simcoe—Grey in 2004, however, Guergis claimed that she would vote against the federal government's proposed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage. She argued that the majority of her constituents oppose the initiative, and that it was her responsibility to reflect their wishes. Guergis voted against Bill C-38, which grants legal sanction to same-sex civil marriage, on its third reading in June 2005.
Guergis endorsed Frank Klees for the leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party in 2004.[2]
