Non-linear exploration is a genre of video games (or a sub-genre of adventure games) whose main characteristic is allowing the player to explore (with some constraints) a complex, non-linearly-mapped world (either 2D or 3D) without being given a direction to follow. Gameplay involves the player exploring the world and running into places he/she cannot yet access, then finding those items (usually in the form of ability upgrades) to allow access to new areas. Usually, certain 'upgrade' items are needed for obtaining others; this is the only true sense of sequence in the game, and is often used to advance the plot, where applicable. However, players often pride themselves on sequence breaking such games--that is, defying the intended sequence of events in a game, often by braving certain challenges (such as, in Metroid Prime, hurrying through the Magmoor Caverns without the Varia Suit to protect from heat damage).
Console game series notable for producing non-linear exploration games include the Metroid and Castlevania series. Thereby the genre is sometimes referred to by console gamers as Castlemet, Castleroid, Castletroid, or Metrovania.
