:It is always a pleasure to bump into an editor that is just here to work on creating the encyclopedia. {{User10|Lutzv}} has been an editor since 2006 but has only really been active the last couple of years. Of her 4000 or so edits, a remarkable 97% are to article mainspace and she almost always leaves a concise edit summary explaining her actions to the next editor. The fact that she has very few entries at her talkpage or at article talkpages hints at some one that is doing "trouble-free editing". Staying away from the Drama Pages is a good example to us all.

Do you have any idea if the ACLU has responded to the criticisms mention in this article? Doug Weller (talk) 16:26, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I hope it is right to respond to you here. I didn't know anything about Alan Sears or the discussion around his book, but since you asked, I had a look at his page. I agree with what you said on the talk page about the use of quotations from interviews constituting a primary source. In this case the interviewer doesn't provide any framework for better understanding Sears, or engaging with him, but essentially is simply seconding him and giving him an unhindered forum to speak his mind.

Since the current version focuses on child pornography, I found a few sources in which ACLU representatives have responded to similar concerns (see below), although these are not responses to the book per se, and so, I guess, not directly helpful. I did also manage to find one newspaper article (in a database) that, although completely sympathetic to the views of Sears and Osten, also gives a sense of the book's content and something of a critique:

"Starting to Construct a Case Against an Un-American Civil Liberties Union" (February 6, 2006). Review of The ACLU vs. America: Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values, by Alan Sears and Craig Osten. Investor's Business Daily. (it is unsigned - or, the database said "IBD staff"). The following might be helpful:

Which raises a question that too often goes unasked: What, exactly, is "the America" that the ACLU believes in?

"The ACLU Vs. America: Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values" sets out to answer that question by reviewing in some detail where the organization has come down on issue after "moral" issue.

As the title suggests, the authors are not without an agenda of their own. In fact, they are the "president, CEO and general counsel" (Sears) and vice president of presidential communications and research" (Osten) of the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), a group of lawyers -- "Christian lawyers," it is stressed -- formed to "slow and stop" the ACLU from waging war on America's "values, law, Constitution and sovereignty."

As the subtitle suggests, the authors come at their subject from a distinctly religious angle. "The ACLU Vs. America" could just as easily be titled "The ADF Vs. the ACLU," because it amounts to a case-by-case indictment of what the authors contend is the ACLU's undermining of traditions and beliefs that people of faith hold dear.

For this reason, the book may fall short in the eyes of those seeking a "fair and balanced" accounting of ACLU activities.

It certainly would in the eyes of nonbelievers. This, however, does not diminish its value in finding common denominators in the cases and causes the ACLU takes up to provide a clearer picture of the group's real agenda.

And here are the statements from the ACLU that I mentioned:

1) Calabrese, Chris (May 26, 2011). "We must combat child pornography without abandoning online privacy" [blog post]. American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org)

2) Murphy, Laura W., ACLU Director, Washington Legislative Office, & Marvin J. Johnson, ACLU Legislative Counsel (May 8, 2002). Letter to Reps. Smith and Scott on H.R. 4623, the "Child Obscenity and Pornography Prevention Act of 2002". American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org) --Includes the following statement: "The ACLU opposes child pornography that uses real children in its depictions. Material, however, which is produced without using real children, and is not otherwise obscene, is protected under the First Amendment." (In the interview Sears does not give a context, but he makes a similar statement in his book on p. 95 - I see in the googlebooks preview - with specific reference to the ACLU amicus brief in the 1982 Supreme Court case New York v. Ferber, and the above letter goes into detail with reference to that case)

3) American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona (undated). "Tough Questions about ACLU Positions."--a helpful document cited on the ACLU Wikipedia page (from a state chapter rather than the national ACLU), which contains a response to the question "Why does the ACLU support pornography? Why are you in favor of child porn?"

Disambiguation link notification for September 11

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File:Monir Portrait-exh ph021.jpg

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Disambiguation link notification for September 24

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Brandenburger Gold Coast, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Frederick William (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your 'trouble-free' encyclopedia building. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Buster7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

It is always a pleasure to bump into an editor that is just here to work on creating the encyclopedia. Lutzv (talk · contribs · count · logs) has been an editor since 2006 but has only really been active the last couple of years.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:
