Lottoland Limited is a company based in Gibraltar. One of its main areas of business is offering online bets on the results of more than 30 different lottery draws.[10][13]

The Founding of Lottoland

Lottoland was founded as a limited company in Gibraltar in May 2013 and started out with seven employees.[4][5]

Products

Lottery betting

Lottoland offers its customers the opportunity to bet on the results of more than 30 different lotteries.[14] According to details provided by the company, the prize amounts are based on the odds of the primary lottery in question. Lottoland offers bets on lotteries such as:

In order to be able to pay out large cash prizes at any time, the company has completed a guaranteed insurance transaction (Insurance-Linked Securities (ILS)) that insures it against high bet payouts.[15][6][16][17] This bond is particularly popular among institutional investors such as pension funds, insurance companies or family offices.[16] The company also has an insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London.[15][18][19]

According to Lottoland, the company has paid out winnings of more than 684 million euros to date. Its highest cash prize of 22 million euros was paid out to a customer in Berlin in May 2016.[20][21][22]

Scratchcards and online games

The company offers digital scratchcards and a multitude of online table, card or slot games in which customers can win cash and non-cash prizes.[14]

Business to business

With its B2B arm Lottoland Solutions, Lottoland offers business customers the opportunity to offer lottery betting.[23]

Lottoland currently has licenses from national supervisory bodies for lotteries in Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland and Australia (as of June 2017).[3][19][24][18][25]

The lottery companies from the 16 federal states of Germany that have joined together to form the Deutscher Lotto- und Totoblock consider betting on lottery results offered by providers such as Lottoland or Tipp24 to be a violation of the German Inter-State Gambling Treaty (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag).[26][27]

The providers themselves, however, emphasise that the German Inter-State Gambling Treaty infringes the Services in the Internal Market Directive of the European Union, which forms the legal basis of their products. They also stress that gambling in Germany on a national level does not fully comply with the requirements of the European Court of Justice, stating that the demand to combat the risks of gambling connected to the state monopoly is not being met in a coherent and systematic manner.[25]

In order to underline its own legal position, Lottoland submitted an application for authorisation of a lottery based on the Lotto 6 out of 49 model in the German federal states of Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Saarland in March 2017. If this application is rejected, the company plans to take legal action in order to obtain a decision from the highest judicial authority.[10][28][25]

Customers and turnover

The company claims that it has a customer base of more than 6 million people from twelve different countries (as of June 2017).[29] It generated sales of over 300 million euros in 2016.[4][10][11][12][7]

Lottoland's growth in sales of 820 percent between 2012 and 2015 enabled it to be placed at number 128 in the Financial Times FT1000 report on the fastest-growing companies in Europe.[30]

Management, staff and locations

Nigel Birrell has been managing the company as its Chief Executive Officer since May 2014.[9] Felix Haas, who has been investing in Lottoland since mid-2016, is the Chairman of the Advisory Board.[31][32][33] At the end of April 2017, more than 350 employees worked for the company.[7]

Acquisitions and investments

Lottoland took over the German lottery portal Lottohelden at the end of 2015.[35] The company also has shares in Jumbo Interactive, an online provider of lottery tickets listed on the Australian Securities Exchange,[36] and LottoGopher, a provider of lottery tickets from Los Angeles listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange.[37]

Cooperation

In Sommer 2017 Lottoland Solutions and William Hill Australia signed a partnership. This deal will give customers of William Hill in Australia the chance to bet on big lottery draws.[38] Such an agreement was also concluded with Kindred shortly before.[39]

Marketing and corporate citizenship

Chris Tarrant, who hosted the British quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for many years, has been the brand ambassador for Lottoland UK since 2014.[40] Lottoland has been the name sponsor of the Brookvale Oval since the start of 2017. The stadium, which is located near Sydney, is the home stadium of the Australian Rugby League team the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.[41]

The legally independent Lottoland Foundation, which is based in the German city of Hamburg and is funded by Lottoland, has existed since autumn 2016.[11] Its activities focus on the charitable aims of promoting sports for both the disabled and able-bodied, especially in German-speaking countries.[42] Examples of the individuals and projects supported by the foundation include the wheelchair athlete Alhassane Baldé and various projects run by the association Arche.[43] It works with the online donation platform betterplace.org.[44]
