Tamia Ivoryav Carter (born January 9, 2000),[2][3] known professionally as Flo Milli, is an American rapper and songwriter.[4] She is best known for her 2019 breakout single, "Beef FloMix", which received over 33 million plays on Spotify to date.[5] She is currently signed to RCA Records.[6]

Early life

Tamia Ivoryav Carter was born on January 9, 2000 in Mobile, Alabama, where she was also raised.[2]

Carter began rapping at age 11, in middle school, forming rap group Real & Beautiful, later known as Pink Mafia.[2] After watching BET's music video countdown show 106 & Park, she was inspired and began writing short verses that grew into songs.[7] She released her first solo song, "No Hook", in 2015.[7] She grew up listening to Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.[7]

Career

Carter recorded the original version of her breakout single, "Beef FloMix", which is a freestyle over the instrumental of Playboi Carti and Ethereal's track "Beef",[5] in October 2018. It went viral on Instagram and other social media sites, including TikTok,[8] where it spawned a number of memes and where users posted tens of thousands of videos to it. It reached number two on Spotify's Viral 50 in April 2019.[9] A fully produced version, released in July 2019, received over 33 million plays on Spotify in its first eight months.

Carter's follow-up single was "In the Party," released in October 2019.[10] In its first five months it netted over 24 million Spotify plays, along with over 11 million on YouTube, with co-signs by Cardi B[2] and others. Her 2019 tour schedule included a performance at El Cid in Los Angeles, California.[11] In February 2020, she released the single "My Attitude,".[12] In reaction, the New York Times described her as a "clever, cheerful lyricist" and the track a "persistently tough blend of aw-shucks sexual candor and eye-rolling dismissals".[13] Nylon also featured the track.[14] She followed it up with the single "Not Friendly" in March 2020.[15]

On May 6, 2019, Carter was charged with second-degree assault on an unidentified woman in a shooting that happened on April 24 that year.[16] Carter was fighting with a group of women when she allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.[17] Police alleged that Carter fired multiple rounds at the victim.[18]

On March 23, 2020, Carter was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.[19]
