"Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" is a song by Argentine producer Bizarrap and Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira. It was released on 11 January 2023, through Dale Play Records, with the music video released on Bizarrap's YouTube channel the same day. The song is part of Bizarrap's Bzrp Music Sessions series.
Background
First reports about a collaboration between the artists broke in August 2022, when Shakira sent Bizarrap birthday wishes.[2] On 9 January 2023, a small plane carrying a flag with the words "Una loba como yo no está pa' tipos como tú" flew over Mar del Plata and Miami, hinting at a release on 11 January.[3][4] Bizarrap announced the track on his social media the following day.[5][6] Lyrics that surfaced were linked to the break-up between Shakira and Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, announced in June 2022.[7]
Music video
The music video was released on 11 January 2023 with the release of the song and shows Shakira singing the song in a teal-light tinted studio with Bizarrap producing the song in the background. The song was viewed over 50.3 million times within its first 24 hours of release.[8] A detail that can be observed in the video is an animation made by Julia Conde, who usually accompanies with her creations both the videos and the live presentations of the producer, paying homage to the famous video of the song "Take On Me" by A-ha, which she considers her favorite.[9][10]
Critical reception
Pitchfork praised the song calling it a "revenge anthem".[11] Writing for The Guardian, Sam Jones called the song "savage".[12] NPR Music called the song a "hard relaunch" for Shakira's career stating that she "emerges mostly triumphant" and is "on the hunt for a new, more relevant sound to reclaim her place in pop music."[13] Rolling Stone stated that the song "reminds people of the superstar [Shakira] is".[14] BrooklynVegan stated that Shakira's "vocals are as iconic as ever, and Bizarrap gives the song a modern and hard-hitting edge".[15] Writing for Billboard, Leila Cobo called the song a "sonic boom" and Griselda Flores stated that it "is all the buzz", alluding to the reactions on social media and by other artists. She added: "Shakira didn't disappoint."[16][17] Suzy Exposito from Los Angeles Times published an article titled "Who is Bizarrap and why is Shakira trashing her ex with him?". The reporter called the song "savage" and a "jam" and stated that Shakira is Latin America's "reigning music queen". She also predicted that, given the singer's fame in the United States, "it's safe to say this latest collab could mark Bizarrap's first major radio hit in the States."[18]
Commercial performance
The song reached the number one spot of iTunes in multiple countries, including Spain, Italy, Mexico and the United States.[19] The music video amassed over 50 million views in its first 24 hours,[20] breaking the record for biggest debut by any Latin song in YouTube history.[21] The song debuted at number one on Spotify Daily Global 200 chart, breaking the record for the highest debut for a Spanish song on the platform's history with 14.3 million streams in its first day.[22]
Impact
Reactions
Latin music artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Tokischa, Fonseca, Andrés Cepeda, Danna Paola, Aitana, Goyo, Paty Cantú, Carla Morrison and Emilia Mernes reacted and praised the song on their social media accounts.[17]
Shakira reacted on Twitter after finding out that her name had been trending at number one worldwide with around 2.5 million tweets. More phrases like "RIP Piqué", "Clara Chía", "Casio", "Rolex", "Hacienda", "Antonio de la Rúa", "salpique", "claramente", and "Las mujeres ya no lloran" were trending topics on the platform as well.[23]
Social media
After the song's release, brands such as Casio and Renault started trending worldwide on Twitter after being mentioned by Shakira on the song leading to both brands reacting to the song on the website.[24] Twitter analytics tool Tweet Binder stated that there was a spike of tweets mentioning the term Twingo after the release of the song, passing from zero mentions on 10 January to more than 139,000 tweets on 12 January, the release day of the song.[25]
Casio's Education Division and the Spain's division of Twingo car's manufacturer Renault also reacted to the song on Twitter.[26] The official Twitter account of the European Union Intellectual Property Office tweeted a joke about the line "Cambiaste un Rolex por un Casio" (You traded a Rolex for a Casio).[27]
Market
It is reported that online traffic and market shares of the brands Ferrari, Casio, and Renault Twingo were impacted by the song's lyrics, which news outlets called "The Shakira Effect". Casio had a 1.87% decrease in value after Shakira's negative mention of them, and Ferrari's share value rose 2.08% after the positive connotation in the song's lyrics, and Renault decreased in value by 1.45%.[28][29]
