Production
Composer Ludwig Göransson will be writing the score, which marks a departure from the director's frequent collaborator Hans Zimmer,[2] owing to Zimmer's preoccupation with the 2020 film Dune.[3] It is also the first Nolan film since Batman Begins without editor Lee Smith, who was replaced by Jennifer Lame.[4] Nolan traveled to Mumbai in February and April 2019 for location scouting.[5]
In March 2019, John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki were cast.[6][7] Pattinson said the script was kept so secretive that he only read it once while locked in a room.[8] Additional cast members Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh were announced as filming started.[9]
Principal photography began in May 2019 and will take place in seven countries, including the United Kingdom, Estonia,[nb 1] Italy, and India.[1][14] On June 30, Pärnu Highway and adjacent streets were closed to make way for filming.[15] The Linnahall also served as a set.[16] The mayor of Tallinn expressed concerns about potential disruptions regarding plans to shoot at Laagna Road, which originally required a stretch of it to be closed for one month.[17] They eventually reached a compromise involving temporary road closures and detours from July 10–25.[18][19][nb 2] Portions of the film will be shot in Mumbai in September.[5]
Director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema is using a combination of 70mm film and IMAX.[21]
Release
Warner Bros. Pictures scheduled Tenet for July 17, 2020. It is the fifth Nolan film to be released in the third weekend of July, which Deadline Hollywood called "a lucky date for Nolan" as his preceding four projects went on to achieve box office success.[22] In August 2019, Warner Bros. secretly debuted a 40-second teaser trailer ahead of Hobbs & Shaw preview screenings.[23]
Notes
- ^ Filming in Estonia came at a cost of $18.4 million;[1] Warner Bros. Pictures paid a rebate to production incentive Film Estonia, which was reimbursed at thirty percent.[10] The $5.6 million refund was granted to Film Estonia by the government,[11][12] a decision supported by Minister of Finance Martin Helme.[13]
- ^ The schedule was reduced from ending on July 28 to the 21st,[18][20] but the Tallinn city government granted two extra days as the process would otherwise not have been completed. Additional costs were reimbursed by production company Funfair Films Limited.[19]
