The masters were always insistent that the motto did NOT mean 'The Middle Way is best", only that it was safest. Should one decide to deviate from the middle way, one should do so prepared. They used to use the example of the three old boys who were local leaders of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381 as an example. The motto derives from Francis Bacon.
