Mikey Way, with his glasses.

Michael James Way (born September 10, 1980), most commonly known as Mikey Way, is the bass guitarist for the alternative rock band My Chemical Romance and the brother of frontman Gerard Way. Way was born in Newark, New Jersey, USA, where he grew up. He is Scottish (on his father's side) and Italian (on his mother's side). Mikey is engaged to Alicia Simmons.

Way came up with the band's name, taken from the book Ecstacy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, by Irvine Welsh, while working at a Barnes and Noble bookstore in Clifton, New Jersey.[1][2]

Early on in MCR's career, it was said that Way learned bass in order to be able to play in the band, which lacked a bassist at the time. But during interviews with Way in their DVD release Life on the Murder Scene, Mikey claims that he had been an amateur musician since he was young and was in bands as a bassist before MCR. He plays a Highway 1 Precision Bass, a Fender Standard Precision Bass[3] and a Fender Jazz Bass.

Recently, Way has undergone Refractive surgery and has dyed his hair black.

While recording The Black Parade, Mikey had a minor emotional breakdown, which caused him to leave the band temporarily, and almost caused them to break-up completely. He went through therapy while taking his temporary leave, and rejoined the band.[4]

He and Gerard are maternal second cousins of Joe Rogan, host of the NBC game/stunt show Fear Factor and former cast member of the sitcom News Radio.

Mikey is afraid of large bodies of water. When he was little he refused to go into the ocean and even swimming pools because he was afraid of sharks.
