Darktide's Revolutionary PVP[edit]

The quality of game design in regards to PVP was the finest of any morpg ever made. Games like WoW are pale husks compared to the rich, immersive player verses player environment that was Darktide, the FFA server. Dynasties of clans shaped the course of the game. Owning, fighting, controlling, looting. Real politics and communities developed and flourished.

Executives of fortune 500 companies took leave to level their mages, it was simply better than money. The adrenaline produced by a battle with actual stakes is incomparable with anything else. The rush was like a drug, an experience not found in anything controlled, lame, or watered down.

Those rare few who were born on Darktide, can dominate any mmorpg with ease. Often they have refined the art of killing, like a forgotten science. A DT vet can wipe a world raid event single-handedly, and control an entire zone by slaughtering everyone who moves through a pinch point.

The devs of Asheron's call could have been wealthy beyond their wildest recollections, if they had but not killed the golden goose. Sadly, AC2 was a wow-like clone, killing off the franchise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.243.164 (talk) 07:27, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Early development history - Jon Monsarrat's role?[edit]

I came to this article in an attempt to find a web page and was surprised when it was not listed here: http://www.mit.edu/~jonmon/Business/Turbine/ . It seems to me this should be included in the history section, but I don't really know how it ties into the grand timeline of Asheron's Call, so I figured I would leave it here. Actually, it's not even included in the Turbine, Inc. wiki page, and according to Jon's website it seems he had a lot to do with the founding of the company as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.129.19 (talk) 21:45, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Story Section[edit]

I just wanted to give a bit more detail on my changes to the story section. It was almost entirely incorrect, so I completely replaced it with my own text.

The story section is pretty long, but I did try to keep it to a minimum of the chain of events which led up to the game's story at release. Humans arrived on Dereth, and found it in the state it was in, because of Asheron/The Sundering (more or less). Asheron cast the sundering because of the Olthoi. The Olthoi were their because of the exploration. The exploration was possible because of BZ. It could probably be shortened a lot, but I did my best to limit it to only that one chain of events. I did not go into the background of Ispar, or of any of the other Empyrean, or really even the Yalaini, and so on. --An Adventurer (talk) 17:06, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AC RAP[edit]

The fact that the famous "AC Rap" is not linked is a real shame. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKjNQb7bvMI

Vandalism[edit]

There was some spam that I deleted. I hope there are no repeat incidents. The Clinger (talk) 00:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup[edit]

I'm not exactly sure of the reasoning for the cleaup tag, but in either case, I will be reviewing and enriching the AC content over the coming weeks. I loved this silly game back in the pre-college days when I still had time to play. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benplowman (talkcontribs) .

I think a good place to start would be removing the original creature section, it is just a mess. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.69.190.75 (talkcontribs) .
*grin* after it was decided to put it here, now we should remove it again? that sounds not really logical, it perhpas could use some work or it's seperate page, but beyond that we should not remove it.
It looks like the creature articles have all been completely deleted. Any information on this? I don't consider these articles "indiscriminate collections of information on MMOs". Many of the Asheron's Call races are quite unique and original fictional creations, with pages and pages of data built up around them over the years. They deserve a place here as much as other completely synthetic races which happen to be more widely known, such as Middle Earth's Valar. --Aaryna 17:22, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

expansion[edit]

this is the 3rd time someone added some info saying there will be an expansion, if you read a little better you will notice the info is already there. so unless you want to make a section of it then it isn't needed to keep adding that info. Boneyard 18:11, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

expansion[edit]

A Second Expansion, Throne of Destiny, has been released July 18th. Could someone care to put up pertinent information about it? --Shultz 05:46, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

there is a line with info on the expansion, looking at the article on a whole it doesn't make much sense to write much more about on this page. Boneyard 07:54, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

pyreal[edit]

is there anywhere to check out the vfd debate for the pyreal article? Boneyard 07:54, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Pyreal -- Mikeblas 19:33, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

chorizite[edit]

My Chorizite article is still separated on its own, and apparently forgotten about. Any objections to merging it into the AC Terms section, since Pyreal is there too? --Aaryna 17:27, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

olthoi merge, well any ac creature merge[edit]

a merge of olthoi into the article is fine with me, perhaps create a section with well known ac creatures as ac is filled with sort of unique creatures: olthoi, drudge, ... Boneyard 11:47, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i noticed there are articles on hollow minion, virindi, olthoi and a small mentioning of drudge. so if we would merge olthoi into this article the same should be done for the other creature i think. that makes me feel we better leave them alone or make asheron's call creatures article. Boneyard 15:47, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
so far i haven't seen anyone agreeing on the merge, so i feel that it is justified to remove the merge tags soon and keep it like it is now. Boneyard 13:35, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it makes the most sense to add a creatures section to the AC page and merge the info from the existing pages into it. Alex 07:56, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that an AC creatures section should be added to this page, replacing the individual pages out there.Ephemeral life 15:41, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see anyone recently disagreeing with the idea of merging, so I'm going to go ahead and do that. Benplowman17:30, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and added most of the new creatures with as many descriptions as I could. Couldn't find descriptions for them all, but i'm sure if someone wants to sift through a few of the texts on random websites, you could come up with a nice description. I don't currently play AC, but it has been my favorite game, hands-down since 2000! I still say that having played WoW and a handful of other MMORPGs. User:WaywardMitchers 03:37, 26 April, 2006 (UTC)

history[edit]

It might be pertinent to add the story of the game as it has evolved since the birth of the game itself. It would make sense to add this to the Story heading. I'd suggest using maggiethejackcat as a reference, I'm sure she wouldn't mind allowing the usage of images from her site, as long as they fufill any other copyright issues. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 169.229.73.149 (talkcontribs) .

I highly recommend not using Maggie the Jackcat's site as a reference. Her site is notoriously unreliable as a source of facts, since her information usually comes from the first reports players send to her when new content opens and she never returns to those pages to edit them when things are found to be wrong. For older lore, Crossroads of Dereth is a good site, but newer lore is very difficult to find. -- Dyinath 18:27, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Original Creatures[edit]

well they got merged to here now and have been expanded a lot, both in information and in number, also with not that original creatures in my opinion. they have become a large portion on the ac article and that seems kinda odd. wouldn't a seperate article be better, certainly for the less interesting ones? perhaps listing a few of the typical ones and further pointing to a seperate article? Boneyard 08:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i agree the orginal creature section "clutters" the article. there is more on this then the actual game. Evil Vin 10:14, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A few additions, corrections, (hopeful) improvements[edit]

Did what I could to fill in some blanks, might come back later to fill in some more neglected parts (for example, Shadow section might be quite a feat to get all of the relevant information into; Tumeroks needs info on Hea/Aun split, etc.)

Wish I could fill in more but I'm pretty sure the game lore is really messed up at the moment with regard to Tursh/Sezzherei/Grael and whatever they're trying to get across there. I can't make heads or tails of what's going on there, especially when it comes to Margul existing in the "days of Grael" and figuring out what relation the Mukkir have to ANYTHING (Mukkir:Ruschk::Gurog:Mattekar? who knows...)

mmorpgchart as source[edit]

i find this a tricky choice, even mmorpgchart themselves rate their ac numbers as very uncertain. is it enough of a trust source like this? i think everyone can agree the population has gone down since it's peak, but to use numbers that simply aren't official i feel isn't the thing to do. Boneyard 07:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

move to gaming wiki[edit]

i removed the tag because i don't feel the game includes that much info on playing the game. it is more about the story behind it and how the game developed in the years it has been running. perhaps the game terms are a little too much, but that also is allowable enough for this encyclopedia in my opinion. Boneyard 07:07, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glaring Errors[edit]

The story portion of this needs major revisions...mainly because it's incorrect. I'll see what I can think up to fix it, but as it is now it's only partially correct. As far as the islands...is it necessary to have that much information solely about Vissidal? The rest of the islands need to be added as well. For some reason it's not coming to me how exactly to add them though. All the creatures in the list link to this entry, but the creatures section was removed so now it's just dead there.

yeah the island section is too large in comparison with the rest, i guess it should be taken out, specially the create list. i remain with the idea we should make seperate articles for things like asheron's call creatures, asheron's call landmasses (or such). that way the main article remains pretty readable. still in those sections we don't need deep game info like that list of creates. thats more for a gaming site. Boneyard 08:00, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems odd to me that there is very little here on the gameplay mechanics (for example, the lack of skill trees, the magic system, the monarchy system), which are a large part of what separates AC from all the other MMOs out there.

The islands section is a huge mess. There is way too much information on Vissidal (already mentioned above), there is a section on the Deep, which isn't an island, and the section on the Dark Isle's monster spawns is incorrect (not to mention, it doesn't keep within the descriptive style of the other island entries). In my opinion, there should also be a descriptive entry on Dereth itself, since it (Osteth and the Direlands) have their own flavor, too. Dyinath 18:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I updated the story section. I tried to include a few sources, but I do not edit wikipedia so I don't know what exactly is a good source when it comes to video games. When it comes to the story of AC, the only real sources are official Turbine/MS sources or the fan sites. Reviews and such don't really touch on it, and never in any detail if they do. --An Adventurer (talk) 20:51, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Release Date[edit]

I've edited the release date to reflect November 2nd, 1999 which is closer to the commercial release date than the previous date. Sentinels and Advocates, player based guides before the program was disbanded, had characters before this date but paying customers weren't on the servers til the 2nd so that should be the release date. http://forums.ac.turbine.com/showthread.php?t=15791 http://www.activewin.com/news/1999/oct_3.shtml http://www.rsxdesign.net/project/9904.html Leftus 17:54, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Servers[edit]

Perhaps the servers should be listed with the newer ones dates of launch included and darktide pvp. For example: Harvestgain Leafcull Verdantine (launched in 200x) Darktide (player vs player only) etc etc Eddiecougar182 (talk) 05:38, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article cleanup[edit]

Asheron's Call Community Wiki[edit]

In response to this revert: Under the WP:ELYES Guidelines, it suggests that links are appropriate for "Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail or other reasons." I would like to add a link to Asheron's Call Community Wiki. The game Asheron's Call is updated monthly and for the last few years this is the only site to document these content patches. The wiki contains 24,000 AC related articles with primary source documentation including archives of material no longer available from the period when the AC franchise was owned by Microsoft/The Zone. It could be argued that this site is a simple fansite and is therefore inappropriate (WP:VG/EL) however I would like to reach consensus on the value of this site in particular and therefore add it (WP:VG/EL).

  • Size - 24,000 articles
  • Verifiability - Primary sources cited and in game screen shots documenting statistics etc.
  • Merged material - Much of the "game guide" material removed from this Wikipedia article has been merged into this wiki.
  • Copyrighted material - Material that cannot be incorporated here is available.
  • Currency - Active site with recent Asheron's Call material not available anywhere else.

In summary, many people interested in the Asheron's Call article here on Wikipedia would also find a link to this wiki useful. Additionally, though not a reason by itself, this sort of exception is widely practiced (e.g., WoW, EQII, Guildwars, Ultima Online, etc). --Tlosk (talk) 16:19, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds reasonable. My removal was a (perhaps hasty) reaction based on WP:ELNO: open wiki's generally not acceptable. Support adding this link now. DP76764 (Talk) 17:40, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. The link seems to be a reasonable exception to the "no open wiki linking" rule. Narthring (talkcontribs) 20:43, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I support keeping the link to ac.wikkii.net. --An Adventurer (talk) 17:19, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This link was removed by Nikkimaria in Jan 2013 and as this link has been shown valuable through consensus I have restored it again. Tlosk (talk) 18:34, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Add that the game is still being played in emulation?[edit]

The game is dead. That is clear. However the game is still being played by most of the players who were left at the end of retail. Myself included. Should we add the fact that third parties are now developing an emulation server that is also capable of doing what the dev's themselves hoped to accomplish, which was to have home servers of this game?
