Please review my chart
[edit]My first ever attempt at using this is at Margaret Sibella Brown#Family and early life. I'd appreciate any feedback about what could be improved. RoySmith (talk) 13:37, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- @RoySmith: Looks good to me 👍 The only thing I would change is the connecting line above Lillian, which isn't centred – could change the penultimate tree chart line from:
{{tree chart| |,|-|-|-|+|-|-|-|v|-|-|-|v|-|-|.}}
to:{{tree chart| |,|-|-|-|+|-|-|-|v|-|-|-|v|-|-|-|.}}
- You could also remove one dash above York Ainsley Walker Barrington, but this might look unbalanced as it wouldn't be level with the line below, going from her to Sibella Annie Barrington. --YodinT 10:24, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
Meaning of each line type?
[edit]Hello! I think this is a cool template! But is there any documentation about what each linetype means? I'm not familiar with dotted lines, or the "Horiz dashed, vert dotted" types of variations of them. Also, how could I go about showing someone has remarried? Runefire3 (talk) 13:21, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- from what I can tell the solid line usually means children and the dashed line usually means marriage. I don't know about dotted line though, my guess is either an affair, illegitimate children, previous marriage, or adoption. But you can have any line type mean anything as long as you state what they mean in the key PharaohCrab (talk) 13:43, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- As PharaohCrab says, there is no fixed meaning to the different types of line, so you can use whatever type of line you think fits the situation best. Most family trees that I've come across treat any subsequent marriages in the same way as the first marriage, not distinguishing between them. Do you have a specific example you'd like more help with @Runefire3? --YodinT 15:03, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Yodin would something like this work if there are multiple children?

F1 | M1 | M1 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
C1 | C2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
{{Tree chart/start|align=center}} {{Tree chart||F1|~|y|~|M1|~|y|~|M1||F1='''F1'''|M1=M1}} {{Tree chart||||||!||||||!}} {{Tree chart|||||C1||||C2||C1=C1|C2=C2}} {{Tree chart/end}}
- Runefire3 (talk) 16:01, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Didn't think to make a key, thank you! Runefire3 (talk) 15:32, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Normally if there are two children from the same parents, I would suggest something like:
F1 | M1 | ||||||||||||||||
C1 | C2 | ||||||||||||||||
{{Tree chart/start|align=center}} {{Tree chart||F1|y|M1|F1=F1|M1=M1}} {{Tree chart|||,|-|^|-|.|}} {{Tree chart||C1||C2||C1=C1|C2=C2}} {{Tree chart/end}}
- If there are two different fathers, you would usually do something like:
M1 | F1 | M2 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
C1 | C2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
{{Tree chart/start|align=center}} {{Tree chart||M1|~|y|~|F1|~|y|~|M2||F1=F1|M1=M1|M2=M2}} {{Tree chart||||||!||||||!||||}} {{Tree chart|||||C1||||C2||C1=C1|C2=C2}} {{Tree chart/end}}
- Note that for the second version I've added a few empty parameters in the centre row, to pad out the space of the rightmost cell (M2), to prevent it from being squashed (a quirk of the template). --YodinT 18:50, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

- Are you trying to import the template to another wiki? If so, have you checked if there's an easy-import version at the Templates Wiki? --YodinT 18:52, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, would I need to delete the templates I've already imported somehow? Runefire3 (talk) 20:21, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Almost fixed, I figured out i was missing ParserFunctions. The example renders fine but without a hide/show button. Runefire3 (talk) 20:42, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Beyond the scope of this page, but it might be a CSS issue? --YodinT 21:01, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

Completed. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 02:43, 8 June 2025 (UTC)- The template should be reverted to the previous version, as most of the pages are in complete chaos! Thank you.--Lasha-george (talk) 12:28, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, oops. See Aaron#Family tree for an example. @Paine Ellsworth? — Qwerfjkltalk 17:08, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
