Lillian Friedman Astor, the first female studio animator, was born April 12, 1912 in New York City. She attended Washington Irving High School where she studied animation and fashion design. After graduating she worked as a fashion designer...
She was hired by Fleischer Studios in 1930 as an inker. Taken under the wing of Fleischer animator Seamus Culhane, Friedman was promoted to in-betweener, responsible for redrawing existing animation strips in motion. So impressed by her skill Culhane "secretly" promoted Friedman to animator where she could generate animation content.
