Nazi Heligoland or officialy the German Reich (German:Deutsches Reich) was a was a short-lived quasi-state that lasted between the 1 August 1952 to 1 January 1956 that controlled Heligoland. It was formed by neo-Nazis and former Nazi German officials and veterans. It was led by Werner Naumann and Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk.
History
[edit]Planning
[edit]Former Nazi Party members, Wehrmacht veterans, former Schutzstaffel officials and veterans, and neo-Nazis under the Naumann Circle began planning to reform Nazi Germany in 1951. They discussed were to set it up and decided that Heligoland was the best location to do it since it was about to be given back to West Germany after British occupation, it was remote enough but not to remote, and it had remnants of fortifications they could use after Operation Big Bang.
Since people were moving back to Heligoland, Naumann saw the opportunity to have neo-Nazi's settle on the island and bring with them equipment to hide in caches across the island so when they take over the island, they already have equipment on the island such as food, water, weapons, and ammo. It would also mean that in case there was heavy resistance from the islanders, there would be reinforcements on the island.
Foundation
[edit]Occupation
[edit]On 1 August 1952, the group of former Nazi Party members, Wehrmacht veterans, former Schutzstaffel officials and veterans, and neo-Nazis got on twenty speedboats with food, water, rifles, ammo, and other equipment and headed to Heligoland from Cuxhaven at night. They landed at the are which the former naval base was and went inland to the residential area. There they got into a short firefight with the local police before arresting the local police. The neo-Nazi militia forces head out to announce the takeover of the island to the few hundred residence on the island who can do little to fight back. The neo-Nazis who had moved on to the island recently and set up the caches would meet with the militia who then collected the equipment from the caches.
Govenrment formation
[edit]Naumann would immediatly declared the police station the new reich chancellery were the new German government will reside. Naumann and von Krosigk began working on a new document to govern the new state. They would finnish the first draft of Das Neue Deutscheprinzip on 2 August. Das Neue Deutscheprinzip stated how the government will funcion, what ministers there will be, what offices there will be, how the military will function, how the police will function, how administrative divisions will work, and other things under Nazism.
With this, von Krosigk founded the Nazi Party (NSDP) and had to choose his cabinet on 2 August. He chose Wilhelm Keppler as the minister of finance, Gustav Adolf Steengracht von Moyland as the minister of foreign affairs, Richard Walther Darré as the minister of labor food agriculture and forests, Paul Wegener as the minister of the interior, Hartmann Lauterbacher as the minister of culture, Josef Altstötter as the minister of justice, Hans Fritzsche as the minister of public enlightenment and propaganda, and Paul Hausser as the commander of the army.
West German response
[edit]The West German government and public would learn of the occupation of Heligoland on 12 March after 10 days of no communication between Heligoland and the outside world. The West German government would declare the takeover illegal, treasonous and call for surrender. The Bundesgrenzschutz with the Kriminalpolizei and Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution would embargo Heligoland.
West Germany appeals to the United States, United Kingdom, and France. France simply refused due to the First Indochina War. The United States refused since the 1952 United States presidential election was upcoming, the US nuclear program was ongoing with the first thermonuclear weapon under development, the Korean War, and it seemed more like a police issue. The United Kingdom refused do to it also because it seemd like a police issue and they were working on their first nuclear bomb. In general they all refused due to internal matters, nuclear weapons programs, or wars and they saw the occupation of Heligoland as not that big of a deal since its a small militia take over.
The West German government contemplated appealing to the Soviets but did not since it could be seen as a betrayal by the western powers and the Soviets would never have agreed to send Soviet troops to Heligoland in the first place since it would be diplomatically disastrous with the west.
