Daytona 500 Pole rules

[edit]

Daytona 500 is different than all other NASCAR Sprint cup as far as qualifing.

  • The front row is decided on the first day of qualifying, called pole day (Budwiser Pole Day since 2005?).
  • After pole day, the fastest driver has the inside grove on the front row, the second fastest driver has the outside.
  • All other drivers are placed into positions in the Gatoraid Dual 150 mile qualifying events.
  • The fastest qualifier earns not only earns the 500 pole, but the pole for the first of the Dual 150 lap events.
  • The second fastest qualifier earns the pole for the second 150.
  • A total of 33 cars can compete in each of the two events, allowing a total of 66 drivers to race for a chance to run in the 500
  • The results of the 2 150 lap events determines the starting positions from 3 to 39 for the 500

The Gatorade Duel at Daytona: These two 150-mile qualifying races set positions 3-39 for the Daytona 500.

A combined total of 66 cars will be allowed into the two Gatorade Duel races.

Cars must compete in one of the Gatorade Duel races, in order to race in the Daytona 500.

Odd-number finishers in the final car owner point standings from last season(1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) are in the first Gatorade Duel race.

Even-number finishers in the final car owner point standings from lasts season (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) are in the second Gatorade Duel race.

Created following to eliminate redlinks

Additional qualified cars that weren’t in the final top 35 at the send of last season are alternated between the two Gatorade Duel fields using an odd-even format.

1971 Speed decrease

[edit]
  • link first time a restrictor plate is used (MI) on Aug. 16
  • link Drivers (Bobby Issac) pull out of races due to restrictor plates.

I'll do some more research in the next day or two - I'm thinking that it was a restrictor plate that slowed the speeds. I remember Bobby Issac got up over 200 mph - in one of those winged warriors, and safety was a big concern. That was many years ago when I was a whole lot younger (and OR), but I'll find something on it. — Ched :  ?  12:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
